Angry What happens at shows makes me so mad.

I was at a schooling show today. A schooling show and I rider came into the ring. She was too big for her saddle (not my issue) and too big for the horse. (Not in height, in weight) I'm usually tolerant of this. After all you never know what the riders efforts to loose weight is. But she isn't very forgiving of her horses back.

But that wasn't what really bugged me.

She had a longer-ish whip (a dressage whip I think). Her horse got the wrong lead because of how she set him up. She smacked him hard! He got the wrong lead again, she smacked him hard again! He finally got the right lead on the corner. She keeps smacking the horse down to the first jump, the distance isn't great and she slams down hard on his back. She continually smacks him around the course, and it becomes apparent that this is a green horse!

She kept rushing to jumps and just smacking him and assuming by going faster he would find a distance. What really really bugged me was she jumped into the five-stride fine two strides in, smacked him. Didn't use leg, didn't use voice just smacked him. And the distance was right there!!!! He sped up and she rode past the distance, he stopped. I have to give her credit for not smacking him them. I'm hoping she knew it was her mistake.. although.. it happened again.

Poor horse =[ I can't beleive he was so tolerant of her, not even a buck out of him. I would have stopped and let her hit hard until she learned her lesson.

Wow. I've seen that many many times, and it never ceases to disgust me.

It's funny how horse shows can always bring out the worst in people. My old horse always used to freak out in warm ups, I can't imagine what would have happened to the rider if they used physical force to get him to calm down.

It sounded like the rider didn't know the proper use of her leg, and the horse seems like such an angel, its a shame.

I would have bucked her off

I saw something similar at a recent schooling show. This was a teenage girl, riding multiple horses over a jump course. Her riding was horrible, and although she didn't beat the horse, she threw down her reins in disgust at the end of the course, and loudly told the judge, "he's so stupid, I just hate this horse."

Her second horse was better- the horse was better trained but her riding was still horrible. The horse did the course and she came off smiling for her parents.

The judge should have stopped her, and excused her from the ring, and the whole show, that sounds like abuse, and should not be tolerated at a show....poor horse should have bucked her off on her fat behind....

I HATE when eople abuse there horses or are bad to them just because they did bad in the show... it is my horses first year in the dressage ring and he FREAKED out, i felt like crying because i new that he is a GREAT horse and it was my fault because i stopped riding and just thought he would be good in the ring.

I think the worse punishment I have ever done to any animal is when my horse reared and struck me out of barn sourness I backed her up in that round pin 4 laps....dont see how someone could take a whip and beat the horse the whole time in the ring
