What gadget do I own?

I found this gadget in my room today and I don't know what it's called or how the maker even began to think it would work. My camera battery is across the country, so you'll have to go off my description...

Eep. Anyway, the thing has snaps that go on the bit, connected to elastic straps, attached to a center ring, attached to a piece of leather with a girth loop. The leather with the girth loop is the only adjustable part.

How is this supposed to work? Wouldn't it get tangled up and tripped on if the horse lowered its head at all?

That looks like a rubber tubing martingale?

Sort of....

why would you attach it right to the bit though? Some sort of strange headset gadget thing?

Sounds like a training fork. Does it look like this:

Except snaps where the rings are and a loop where the snap is.

ETA: Slow computer, HJ got to it first, LOL!

Yeah, but how would the reins slide through snaps? That's what makes me think it was designed to go on the bit...

I have a martingale kinda like that (mine has a neck strap though) , and the snaps snap onto rings on the reins. There are 3 little rings spaced evenly apart, and it attaches to one of those.

It definitely doesn't go on the reins... the snaps are too small to get on anything but the smallest curb rein I have here... so I can only infer that it snaps to the bit (which it does very easily). Sorry, I couldn't draw trigger snaps in paint!!

I have a German martingale (what you're describing, SJ), and the straps on this aren't NEARLY long enough to use with it, even for a pony (sans maybe a small). I know this is the complete thing... there were no other pieces involved.
