What exactly is SCID in Arabs?

Is it comparable to HYPP?

From what I understand it more closely similar (in action) to EIA but is a heredity Genetic thing affecting Arabians and not viral, non contagious. Autoimmune.? I know its detrimental to foals that carry 2 copies of the gene.

SCID is closer to LWO in terms of how it affects horses.

Just like LWO, SCID is only deadly if the foals inherits the gene from each parent.

HYPP on the other hand can affect the foal whether it has one copy or two of the gene.

SCID stands for Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Disorder. Basically the foal has no immune system and will die within a few months of age of some form of infection.

There is no cure or help for SCID. You can treat the infections the foal gets, but it is only prolonging the end. You cannot save a foal with SCID.

However, a SCID carrier is a perfectly healthy and normal horse, just like a horse with a copy of the LWO gene. Also like LWO, SCID is very simple to test for and avoid.

Okay, thanks. I was reading on Fugly about that SCID carrier mare that they kept breeding although the babies kept dying. Such a disgrace

I wouldn't be surprised, and they are no better than Paint breeders who keep breeding Lethal foals in the hopes of getting just one that is flashy and fancy.
