what does it cost to geld a colt??

How much does it cost to geld a colt, and at what age is it best to do it? I've also heard that having it done in colder months is better because of the lack of flies is that true?

I don't know where you are from, but here in Kansas City, it costs $90 to geld one if you take it to the vet. Add another $35 trip charge if the vet comes to your house. I've always cut mine as soon as I can feel both testicles. Age is of no importance, since every horse can "drop" at a different age.

Also...late fall or spring is best to do it. Too hot or too cold isn't good.

It costs $125 here.
$100 if I take him to the Vet.

People will scoff at this, but I have seen it work to many times not to have some faith in it.
I do not have my horses cut unless the Almanac says the blood is in the feet (as opposed to the head).
I never believed in this until my FIL warned me about having 2 cut that day because they would bleed forever. All three did, had to call in another Vet to help.
Since then, I look it up, never had a bad experience since.
I even had the Vet call me once and ask half jokingly if it was safe to geld.

Cost depends on your location. I've heard of amounts rangeing from 75 to 350 all across the country. My vet charges 125 for a routine gelding and the cost goes up for problems. your best bet is to call your local vets and ask.

Average cost would be around $100-$200 depending on your area, specific vet, and if you have the vet come out or you haul the colt in.
Gelding in the spring or fall when it is cooler is beneficial- then you don't have to worry about bugs irritating it. I don't like doing it if it is too cold, incase I need to do some hosing...but cool enough where there aren't a lot of bugs.
We always used to geld the spring of their yearling year, but this year we chose to geld the colts this fall. We did it after weaning (we gave them a few weeks to settle down and adjust to life without mom). They were about 5 months old when they were gelded. Everything went fine.

Mine cost right around 125.00 to have them come out and do it. At the same time the wolf teeth should be pulled. You dont want to do it when the flys are out and about.
