What do you think was discovered first?

Ok do you think the Arabian or the Akhal Teke was founded first?? I've seen some places that they have proof that the Teke came first. I personally believe it's the Arabian, and NOT because it's my favorite breed

I personally think the Arabian. They have skulls from over 6,000 years ago as well as other items strongly resembling Arabian horses found in the deserts of Arabia and that area. I know the Teke is old (also a great breed as well) but I have never heard of them finding evidence of them from that far.

Actually, according to some theories they all evolved (yes naturally evolved) around the same time. Some scientists say there were four "foundation" horse type that occured as the horse became a "true" horse. 1 was a small desert dweller type (similar to the Caspian and Arabian), 1 was a lean steppes horse (ancestor of the Teke), one was a stocky, heavy horse (beginning of Draft types), and one was a sturdy pony from Great Britian (start of Exmoors, and other moor ponies). Well, that is their theory anyway

Smile

That is a good question!
Quote:
People first domesticated horses some 5,000 years ago, probably in central Asia. The earliest evidence of horse domestication has been found in the steppes of the eastern Ukraine, northern Caucasus, central Russia and Kazakhstan.
I know that the AHA says that Arabian Horse is, but the Akhal Teke Association says that this is not so that they are.
Quote:
Excavations in southern Turkmenistan have uncovered skeletal remains of tall, fine-boned horses dating back to 2400 BC. The breed name, however, dates back only to the end of the nineteenth century.
Which would lead one to presume that the Akhal Teke is the oldest breed.
Quote:
The Akhal-Teké has been bred and raced for at least 3000 years.
So it would seem that the Akhal Teke would have the edge when it came to being the oldest..but now we have to decide if we are looking for the oldest breed selectively bred by man...if that is the question then one would then assume that the Arabian would be the oldest.

Quote:
Arabian horses first appeared in the Arabian Peninsula at least 2,500 years B.C.E. They were carefully inbred to maintain desirable features (e.g. stamina, soundness, strength, and beauty), and are therefore one of the oldest, if not the oldest breeds in the world.
I really don't know...so I will say that I think the Andalusian is the oldest....
According to the IALHA website:
Quote:
The Andalusian is one of the great, ancient breeds of horse. It originated in the Iberian Peninsula and is named for the region of Spain called Andalucia though the breed actually was more widespread. The Andalusian horse has been documented throughout European history and was praised as the finest horse of war by the Romans and Greeks in ancient times. It’s history as a equine type goes back even further, documented by cave paintings believed to be 20,000 years old.

Akhal-Teke(Turkmenistan)
Origins: The Akhal-Teke of Turkmenistan, a republic in central Asia which lies between the Caspian Sea and Afghanistan, is believed to be a descendant of Turkoman or Turkmene, an ancient race of horse thought to have existed thousands of years ago, but now unfortunately extinct. It takes its name from a tribe called the Teke which still inhabits the Akhal oasis in the Karakum desert, close to the borders of Iran, where the horses taditionally live in herd under the watchful eyes of mounted herdsmen.
The Arab, or Arabian, is on of the oldest of the hotblooded breeds, and its blood lines are present in many modern breeds today which extend throughout Europe and the United States.
The Arab was also of great importance to the Bedouin, the nomadic Arabs of the desert, who can trace their association with the breed back to 3000 BC to a mare called Baz and a stallion called Hoshaba.
