Arabians. They are the oldest known breed on the planet. The Arabian is also the bases to many breeds today.

Talking

Okay People, time to stir this discussion up a bit.....

Are your decisions based on legend, "hear-say", breed publicity & promotion materials or..... scientific FACT?

According to the information I found online:

Arabian horses first appeared in the Arabian Peninsula at least 2,500 years B.C.E.

The Akhal-Teké has been bred and raced for at least 3000 years.
Excavations in southern Turkmenistan have uncovered skeletal remains of tall, fine-boned horses dating back to 2400 BC. The breed name, however, dates back only to the end of the nineteenth century.

Personally I think that the AHA stretches the truth a little bit in order to better publicize their breed. I think that while the Arabian is most certainly one of the oldest breeds I don't think they are THE oldest. Take the Akhal-Teké for instance, they are a documented older breed. But do you hear about them being so? No, because the AHA says THEY are the oldest breed and their aren't enough Akhal-Teke people over here to put up the stink that they are in fact the oldest.

Now I won't argue with you that the Arabian pedigree may be documented better, I don't know enough about the breed to argue that. I also think the AHA exagerates a little when they say the Arab is the most influential, what about all the horses that influenced the Arab wouldn't they be the most influential?

I also think a lot of the problem lies with fans of the breed who say their horse is the oldest, just because it gives them something extra to brag about. Isn't there enough to brag about already?

If it was the Akhal Teke, then what other breed would the Arabian have come from?? Akhal Teke x ? =Arabian?? Or they could have found some other horse and called it an arabian, I don't know. As seaside said up there, There were other breeds that came after the arabian and that's how the other breeds came along.

Horses actuially evolved from things that have four claws, and were smaller than a dog. . .I was reading up on it the other day, it was interesting!

As for which came first, it was the arab. Almost all horse breeds are somewhat derived from the arab, actually. there's a little bit of arab in all of us
