Hay, Hay, and mroe hay. My friend runs every week....and she feeds all you can eat grass, and "meals" of alfalfa hay. Others feed alfalfa pellets, same regimine. And others feed Strategy, or one of the Grainuline products I believe it is called...by Evergreen. Depends SOLELY on the horse, the quality of the hay provided, and how well the horse utilizes the energy involved. One must remember, a barrel race is ran on anaerobic energy if you don't do it right. While Fat is excellent source of energy, unfortunately not many horses can convert fast enough to UTILIZE it. A barrel horse runs mostly on carb storage cause it is quick to burn. (your every day backyard barrel horse) However, many people in the upper level rides kick over the conversion properly, and why you see barrel horses being worked BEFORE a run. Kicking them into aerobic energy so they can utilize the fat energy.... ok, sorry, bit more than you probably wanted. LMAO

Depends on the horse. Doc is an easy keeper and he gets hot easy...so just whole oats and coastal. Dash, Sam, and Barbie are seniors, they get senior feed and coastal. My new girl Kellie came to me very underweight and gets alfalfa hay and Nutrena Vitality Ultra. They also get supplements as well....They all get flax seed, BOSS, and a joint supplement. All but Kellie get a cup of alfalfa pellets. Dash and Kellie get corn oil to help with their weight. Doc gets a vitamin supplement since his oats don't have much in the way of vitamins. They also have free choice round bale in the pasture. Last edited by BlingRacer; 06-19-2007 at 12:42 PM. |

We feed a special mix that is similar to Purina Race Ready. It is made fresh at our feed-mill each week. We add in polished rice bran and they all get alfalfa hay and grass hay (free choice). Others get things added in, but this is the basic makeup.

My horses are out in pasture but come in everyday to get some grain with a mixture of equine power 2000 and some liquid supplements on top. Im not very good at this kinda stuff but it seems to work for my horses.
