what dewormer do you use?

We were using the on-food dewormer for our two mares, but we got brave yesterday and go some Zimectrin gold paste. It was not that bad; my fiancee and I were easily able to get them to swallow it; we had some doubts but took the plunge. I like it because it covers everything in one shot; tapeworms, bots, etc.
So what do you use/recommend? If you use paste in a syringe, how does your horse, or do your horses, react?

Sweet Iron, it's good that you "took the plunge" because even when horses are on a daily dewormer they need to be paste dewormed twice a year to combat bots and tapeworms which the majority of daily dewormers don't get. If you happen to be using one of the newer ivermectin daily dewormers you still need to deworm for tapeworms once or twice a year, depending on the tapeworm risk in your area.

I rotate Ivermectin, Quest or Quest Plus and Strongid. I use Quest Plus spring and fall to combat tapeworms and bots, use Strongid during the worst part of the summer when my parasite load on the pasture is small and Ivermectin during the winter months.

Interesting.. thanks. I was not using daily feed dewormer; it was the stuff that you buy in a pound package and use periodically. I found that they were not eating it! They would shake their grain around somehow and both of them avoided the powder and it sat at the bottoms of their grain bowls! I thought, enough was enough.
For anyone who has never tube-dewormed; it was not that bad. our one mare is skittish at best, and she took it fine. it helped to watch a video of smoeone actually doing it; it would have been better to watch someone actually do it in person, but we got by. A good tip: make sure your horse's mouth is empty; with no grain or hay being chewed.
I wonder if this was flavored or something? I hear horror stories of people's horses spitting it out, etc. but neither of our ladies did that.

I think Zimectrin Gold is Orange flavored. It seems like I have inadvertantly tasted all of them. My guys usually get the unflavored generics because they cost about half what the brand names do.

If you get the tube back between the teeth and cheek it is very hard for them to spit it out. I have one mare that it is just more time efficient to squirt it on her food. She gives me the lip, but eats it just fine.

You can also try a little honey or molassas on their food to keep powders on.

I hardly deworm at all anymore. I do FECs and deworm only those who need it.

What dewormer I use depends on the stall, tha pastures, age of the horse and what worms needs to be addressed.

New horses usually gets a moxidectin+praziquantel combo to start out with, then moxidectin every 12 weeks the first year. If more is needed I go with pyrantel pamoate the next year.

About 10% of the horses needs regular deworming, and I then rotate pyrantel pamoate, ivermectin and moxidectin every year.

I use ALL the products, just rotated around. I had 3 get sick off of Zimectrin Gold though-but that was when it first came out-I wonder if they have improved the 'formula' any since then. LOL!

If they got sick and it was when it first came out, it was likely because they did have tapeworms and them dying and being passed was very hard on the horses. Or they had not been dewormed with an ivermectin product in awhile, and there was a large die-off of worms.

There's a daily ivermectin dewormer now? Anyone have a link. Never heard of it.
