What colour is he ?

This is Jack our one year old QH colt. His Sire is a black and his Dam is a palomino. He has lighter coloured brown eyes and his coat has gone a brownish colour. He was black when he was about 8 months old but was NOT born black, which all blacks are. The one pic is of him as a baby, then as 8 months, the now as a yearling. He does have dorsal stripe but I do not believe he is Grullo.

He is registered as a black. I am thinking smokey black. What do you think ? Could he be just sun bleached? He did shed out this colour after a heavy winter coat.

( Thanks Appyluvr )

Yes, that is what I am hoping. His sire is a beautiful black. But since his dam is a palomino I was thinking he just might be a smokey. I had to ahev him eglded becaus he was Cryptorchid, I was going to keep him a stud, but such is life. He is such a good boy, sweet and affectionate.

What exactly do you mean by that statement?

Also, if you can see his dorsal, can he really be that black? Just a thought.

to have a dun gene one of the parents have to carry it(and show it).I just think hes a smokey black. My filly has a light dorsal stripe but she is chestnut.

He has classic signs of a smoky black: lighter than normal eyes, coat that fades toward golden-brown, and golden fur inside his ears.

I am going to agree that chances are very high that he is a smoky black.

Either one or both parents have to have dun factor in order for the outcoming foal to have it. Is the palomino a dunalino? That would make it possible for the foal to have dun factor.

Our palomino mare is believed to be a dunalino. She had a 'bay' with a dorsal stud colt for us when bred to a smutty buckskin. And when bred to a grulla she had a chestnut filly with a dorsal. (We sent in pics to AQHA, they confirmed it.)

If you really want to know his color, you can get him tested by UC Davis. I don't know how bad you want to know and pay the money for the test results seeming as he is just a gelding now.

Thank you for your thoughts everyone. I was leaning toward smokey black too.

I will not get him tested as I will not be able to breed him anyways ( maybe I can clone him ? LMAO ! )

His Dam was not a dunalino. But his Sire does have Dun on his side but not him, he is jet black.

Okay then, if neither parent has dun factor...the foal cannot. It's might just be countershading that you are seeing.

Yes, I don't blame you I don't think that we would test a gelding. But I thought I'd let ya know just incase. We test most to all of our foals(colt or filly) because we are selling them...and they are often times going off being stud prospects and broodmares.

The only smokey black mare that I've ever seen in person, just looked like a regular black horse(maybe a little lighter). Your gelding doesn't look like our black filly...she is jet black over winter, then fades due to the sun over summer....but she is still pretty darn black...with some lighter/browner areas.
