What color is our Filly??

We bought this nice Pony mare ad her filly last week and have no idea what color she is going to be. Mom is obviously a Palomino.

It's hard to tell when they're that young. But It does look like she's lightening around her flank area. My friend has a 3 year old who was a gorgeous black... now she's roaning. so it's hard to say...but she is adorable!!

Something to do with bay I would think. She does look very odd. Very cute though

At this point I'd say bay. Do you know what the sire's color is?

Looks like a bay to me. To dark for a buckskin. beautiful baby. momma looks like she could stand a few more groceries or a deworming and a teeth check up. Have you been able to have a vet check on the mare yet? Babies often cause mares to loose weight when the mare puts alot of extra nutrients into the milk. But I'm sure with a bit more time she'll gain that weight. Do you know what the sire was supposed to be? What breed are they?

Besides being VERY cute I believe she is a bay, or POSSIBLY a dark buckskin.

Thanks for the ideas. Everyone I talk to says dark buckskin. I bought this mare and foal at a sale so I have no idea of her sire. The mare is 54" tall. They are QH type. I have the mare on Mare and Foal feed. She will start to gain weight soon. I am working her this week. This is not my first baby

I know its hard to tell colors on babies cause they tend to change. She has light cloing around her eyes. I guess only time will tell.

Bays are born with the future-black-hair on the legs as a tannish color, and depending on the modifications of bay they have - pangare being the most common, giving the tannish muzzle - their face hairs will vary.

In contracts, black horses are usually born a mousey-gray color. If they are born black, it's very often a sign they will be gray - think Lipizzaners, nearly all of whom are gray, nearly all of whom are born black, not mousey
