What color?

Hi, what color do you think my foal will be?

The mare is a dark bay (or brown) thoroughbred: http://www.pedigreequery.com/dazzling+gem2

And the father is a chestnut quarter horse: http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/obviously+mr+te

The foal is due April 16th....I can't wait that long! (It is my first foal, I do not own the mother, but the foal will be mine.)

Offspring Color Probability

58.34% -
Bay
33.33% -
Chestnut
8.33% -
Black

Unfortunately, those numbers aren't necessarily accurate. It all depends on whether the mare is homozygous for black or not, and whether the stallion has 0, 1, or 2 copies of bay (Agouti). If she is homozygous black, then chestnut is not an option.

If she or the stallion are homozygous for bay, then black is not an option. If she is homozygous black AND homozygous bay/brown, then the foal will be bay/brown.

Bay x Sorrel/Chestnut= Bay, Sorrel/Chestnut, or Black

However...as JBandRio said...if the mare is homozygous black then cut out a chance for a sorrel/chestnut foal. If either mare and/or stallion are 'AA' for agouti...then cut out a chance for a black foal.

How does gray work with the Agouti gene? The mare's mother and grandparents were all gray. Could that mean that she did not get an "A" from that side?

Gray and agouti work independently. Gray only masks the other color genes "underneath it". So each of those horses could have been bay (agouti) under their gray... or not. :-) No way to know without testing.

Well, there goes that theory! I guess Maple could be "AA". I was hoping maybe she was "Aa". I guess there is still a chance....lol. I love black....Maple just has to pass on a small "a" and a big "E", while the father gives small "a" and "e". lol Now how do I explain that to the horse?
