HOrmones. Ever heard the saying, Mind over matter? It is true!!! Basically, there MIGHT have been a pregnancy, but for some reason, was absorbed. But the body still thinks it is there. So progesterone continues to produce, nothing is there to kick the CL out of production of progesterone (prostaglandin F2alpha is supposed to do that) and the CL remains. The ONLY thing that doesn't occur, is the ECG is not there. Unless there is a partial pregnancy, then, well, everything is haywired!!

A foal can be reabsorbed really early on - i think this is what BW meant by a partial pregnancy. basically a false pregnancy is caused by the failure of the corpus luteum to regress when the uterus is gravid (empty) after a heat cycle. The corpus luteum is the part of the ovary that produces the hormones necessary to maintain pregnancy. (although in some animals these are also produced by the placenta) Its extremely commonplace in dogs and not unheard of in some other animals such as horses and rabbits. Lou

Sometimes, the placenta can remain and the "fetus" not develop either. That would be what I consider a "partial" pregnancy.

This is how it was explained to me. Basically, you have the 2 sides of the Embryo. The Trophoblasts and the Inner Cell Mass. The Trophoblasts give rise to the PLacenta, and the ICM gives rise to the fetus. Well, if the Trophoblasts work, and the ICM doesn't, then you can have a partial for a while. Usually, the body absorbes them, but rarely, they are maintained and just nothing develops on the fetus side. Or it reaches a certain stage and stops developing. Twins can have this happen as well. So you can have I guess 1.5 pregnancies??. I had it happen, or so I was told as a Theory of what happened. Had my second kid. All the placenta and stuff was out. Well about 2 months later, I passed a small mass. Come to find out, it was a full placenta, early early stages, never completely developed. With ultrasound, found the connection spot. Doc said I absorbed the rest of it, but placenta never absorbed. Developed, then just stayed. Body finally said GET OUT!! needless to say, I was freaked out over the whole process and docs. Thought they "forgot" something. Could have been the other placenta attached and grew over it, or it was right next to the other placenta, so they never found it. Oh well, done and over with. Anyways.
