What causes a mare to foal early?

There is a friend of mine that I just recently met actually who breeds and she has two mares that foaled like a month early. The one baby looks perfectly fine but the other is VERY VERY tiny. She has both of them wrapped in blankets, with lights, and their moms body heat too.

What causes mares to go that early? They weren't originally due until the beg. of march. I feel bad.....I hope that they make it. She is a good owner so I really feel that they will. Pray for them!

There is no definitive answer and without knowing the mares themselves and the breed of horse, etc it is impossible to give you a reason why. Too many factors could play a part.

Are they maiden mares?
What type of diet are they on?
What about the stallion?
How much stress are the mares under?
What is the worming and shot schedule for the mares and the stallion?
Are the mares separated or in a herd situation?

There are too many factors to say why.... for sure.

I have mares that often foal late or early. Each mare is different... much like women. Every birthing experience with mares is much like that with women... each one is unique. I have one mare that was always about two weeks early... I have another mare that is always about a year to foal date.
