| Senior Member+ | What can I do for hock scraping? Our horses are constantly getting hock scrapes from getting up and down when rolling etc. I have been just putting neosporin and cleaning them, also using a product called Tea Tree on them. They heal up but them come back the first time they roll or lay down and get up. I don't use bedding, it isn't an option here because they are in a pasture with a run in shed. So basically they go everywhere. I had asked someone once about wrapping the hock but they said no because it needs the air to dry out and heal. What cam I do. My vet says this is so common. |

| Senior Member | I would think that, Yes, the wound does need air to dry and heal, but it also needs the initial protected time to mend itself back together first before drying. I personally would clean the affected area, put some neosporin on like you said, then wrap it for a day or two so there is at least a formation for a scab to appear, then take it off for a day. Every other day on and off cleaning with the antiseptic. Once healed, get that darned horse some knee pads,J/K Hee-hee LOL..... |

| Senior Member+ | unless they are getting nasty injuries from it them just treat them and don't worry about it too much. It's part of having horses outside 24/7 and providing bedding is not a possibility as wind and weather elements will remove it faster than you can put it down Mine get them sometimes, didn't even know what they were at first lol |

| Senior Member+ | They are a pain arent they?! I have been using vaseline on mine...it seems to keep the tissue more moist and allows it to heal better. The vaseline stays on better too.

| Senior Member+ | Even with softer bedding, my horse still got hock scrapes. They are bound to happen, even with the best shavings/bedding in the world.
