some horses just won't be ridden in a curb.....the bit you posted looks like it has pretty high shanks....based on what you said about your mare you want a curb with very small shanks so there is less pressure on her.........I think someone had mentioned an Argentine snaffle......it is a nice curb for horses that don't like curb bits.....it is called an Argentine Snaffle but it is considered a curb bit by the AQHA since it has shanks....it is a great "inbetween bit" .........I use it all the time and have had great results.....it has the benifits of a curb but is not so severe and has more of a snaffle effect

here is some info.....from http://www.horsetrainingvideos.com/tack/curbbits.htm ......website may be helpful too.......
Argentine Snaffle
This bit is perfect to use as the first step in the transition process. The short, curved-back shanks allows the horse to learn to respond to the curb yet is very mild. The loose-shanks provide for good direct-rein lateral flexion. Recommended for horses that are very sensitive.
Mouthpiece: 5" wide, 7/16" diameter snaffle
Cheek-piece (shank): 5" long
Usual price of this bit is $85. Special price available for a limited time only.
Special price $69.00 • Add to Cart

hope I helped!

there are also some nicer verisons of this bit out there for shows too.....this is mine......(bad pic...sorry...I will try to get some better ones....mabe with my new leather curb strap...I HATE the chain that is on this one right now...WAY too severe for my girls...but I had trouble finding a leather strap that would fit in the small holes in my bit...they aren't normally that small.......so no one has small enough leather straps for them.......geesh...lol)

Bit #2 & #3: I own both bits, one's a dogbone one's a regular snaffle mouth, and I have one with a lifesaver mouth and another with copper wire wrap -- LOVE them all. Great bits, very affordable which is always a plus!

Bit #4: Worth a try -- not sure if the style of shanks are "legal"

Bit #5: I like it, I just think with how the shanks are shapped you'll REALLY have to keep a loose rein and off her mouth. Even though they're short(er).

Bit #6: I'd pass - it's a gag mouth, something I really wouldn't even advise "trying" -- also not typically legal for rail/patterns.

It is not a gag as much as it has a bit of play, just like a loose ring snaffle has some play, but is not considered a gag. I have the butterfly bit {6th} in three different mouth-pieces, and I'm about to buy the one you showed again, because I have two horses workign in it at the current time.

My second suggestion for you would be:

I also love it, and it is my other favorite to move to from a snaffle.
Thanks She does like my snaffle with a port, but I do find she gets abit antsy and nervous with it, but not nearly as bad as with the curb

It is better to have a tight bit than a loose one because a horses tongue can actually get cut off with too loose of a bit.
