If your horse rides nicely in a snaffle or halter, guaranteed that bit you posted has FAR too much shank leverage for her which is why she's nervous in it. Short shanked snaffles are legal -- perhaps she'd be far better in a 3-4" shank than a 7-8" shank

If it has a shank is it not a curb bit?

Technically it's a "curb" because it has shanks, although a snaffle mouth. Look at an Argentine Snaffle...it has shanks yet's still called a snaffle. Dogbone mouth pieces even with shanks are refered to as dog bone snaffles moreso than dogbone curbs...

| Senior Member+ | She is 12 years old and we plan on showing in western pleasure, trail and horsemanship The bit I'm trying now just has a straight, slightly swept back shank. But the shanks are about 6-7" long. Oh and as far as the club rules all it says is that we need a curb bit, so pretty much anything is fair game I appreciate all the replies

This is the bit I went to when I had to put my mare in a shanked bit for shows. She typically road in a d-ring snaffle or halter. She accepted this bit ok.

Bit #2 & #3: I own both bits, one's a dogbone one's a regular snaffle mouth, and I have one with a lifesaver mouth and another with copper wire wrap -- LOVE them all. Great bits, very affordable which is always a plus! Bit #4: Worth a try -- not sure if the style of shanks are "legal" Bit #5: I like it, I just think with how the shanks are shapped you'll REALLY have to keep a loose rein and off her mouth. Even though they're short(er). Bit #6: I'd pass - it's a gag mouth, something I really wouldn't even advise "trying" -- also not typically legal for rail/patterns.

My second suggestion for you would be: http://store.reinsman.com/products/s...urb/1081350054 I also love it, and it is my other favorite to move to from a snaffle.

I hate how Reinsman won't let you link a product in their store... Let's see if it'll let me do this... (this is the bit ginger linked to above)
