Question What bit do you start your horse in??

Just wondering what bits you all prefer for starting a horse??

I am currently riding my green filly in this bit from State Line Tack.

http://www.statelinetack.com/global/...8826&Ne=156695

My mare seems to mouth it a ton. I know it's got the copper rollers, but do you suppose she could be getting pinched by them? Because last time I rode her in it she seemed to be doing fine and then she bucked a little shook her head and it was over. I thought possibly the bucking could have been in reaction to the bit pinching.

IMO, that's probably not the best bit to start a young horse on. My experiance has been the more simple the bit, the better. I started my mare with a full cheeck snaffle, and am going to be starting my two year old gelding in the same bit. Let me see if I can find you a picture....

Okay, heres one I found on google, pretty close to what mine looks like.

It won't slide out of their mouth, and also will put pressure on the opposite side, which helps the greenies learn quicker what you want.

a loose ring snaffle or eggbutt is good. eggbutt is probably better though b/c it doesnt pinch ur horses mouth

a nice simple loose ring, eggbutt or full cheek snaffle would be best...one without copper or rollers...

A Myler Snaffle for me - expensive, but I like them.

Re-makes are a little cheaper, but you get what you pay for with bits.

I start mine in a sidepull, work up to a Snaffel either a d-ring or an eggbut then on to a curb bit.

i use a breaking bit and spray it with "Tasty Bit" makes the horse accept the bit more as it tastes nicer- and the breaking bit has keys on it to encourage mouthing of the bit!

I like to use a sweet iron loose ring snaffle, preferably with a lozenge. I have one with a copper lozenge (rather than sweet iron) but I don't think you can compete in these in dressage as there is then more than one type of metal in the horse's mouth. Second preference would be a KK (Gold) training snaffle (which also has the lozenge)
