Hoof pick! Lol, um...iodine, and desedine (sp?) is a MIRACLE cure and you can buy it at the store lol you don't have to go to a special horse store! It's like this baby butt rash stuff you put it on if they have cuts or scabs..sunburns! I reccomend it lol.

I think Rodeo Queen was thinking of Desitin. It does work great as a sunblock, and as a salve after sunburns especially on their muzzles. Something not mentioned that's very important is Epsom Salts. keep a bag in case of abcess or soreness. also, a human first aid kit is a must. and a horse thermometer. that's all i can think of that's not been already mentioned and is a MUST.

I agree with you both, but would also add poultice, epsom salts, blu-kote(or something similar), a zinc cream(Zincofax, Penaten, or Ihle's paste), and a fly repellant for around wounds(Swat works well)

Oh yeah, one essential item I forgot( ), DUCT TAPE!!! Duct tape is very important! I've found so many uses for it, not just for first-aid, but also as a great all-round tool for fixing things around the barn. For first-aid, I most often use it to adhere the end of Vet-Wrap so that it's more secure. I've used it, as well, as a boot to help keep a sugar/iodine pack in a horse's foot, and to help keep poultice on the sole of a horse's foot. It's very durable(two layers on the sole of the horse's foot stayed on all day, even though the horse was turned out!), and quick and easy to both put on, and remove. I wouldn't use it anywhere where it could get contact with fur(Pretty obvious what the results of that would be!).
