Elbow grease and lots of it. I find grooming on a daily basis, helps the overall appearance of the horse. Oh and I loff Show Sheen.

putting your horse in a protectie bubble till you enter the show ring to keep those lovely stains off them
haha i wish
lots of "elbow grase" as peekaboo says,
bathing the day before along with a nice good brushing
make sure your brushes are clean.
picking out the stall every so ofter to keep off stains and such, because we all know that after a nice bath, all our white horses like to have a nice roll, pesky little buggers lol

Whites and greys are impossible to keep clean.

Hahah I am the grooming queen. Everything has to be perfect I had to show a white pony last year, so I learned quite a few tricks =) Basic things: For shampoos I use QuicSilver, Tresamme(sp) shampoo and conditioner, and a LITTLE bleach mixed in for the tail. (It also helps if you leave QuicSilver on for a longer time, makes it whiter!) Ivory soap also works VERY well for whites. After the pony was bathed and rinsed, I would let her stand in the crossties until she was dry. Then, I would put on her standing wraps, show sheet, and Neck/tail sleezys on to keep her covered so she couldnt get any spots on her. Now I am also obsessed with clean tack. hehe. I use Leather CPR first. AMAZING product, works so well. Also, its a cleaner/conditioner all in one so you only have to do one cleaning. After that, I use Brasso on all the nail heads, and the two D rings on the saddle to make them shine. Then I do the same on the bridle, but instead of using that on the bit, I use toothpaste. Works just as well! I use Electrosol dishwashing tablets for my stirrups. Fill up a bucket with hott water, drop it in, then put the stirrups in the bucket. Works great. When all the tack is done, I put my saddle cover/bridle bag on and put everything in the trailer. When at the show I used WOW!Whitener on those little spots she had on her. Brush the tail out and put some show sheen on it, take a soft horsehair brush to her as well as a grooming cloth and she was ready to go! Those are all my grooming/cleaning tricks

I start preparing the horse about 3 months before the first show. This is when they are just coming off of a spell. Feed is increased with extra shiny foods like linseed, copra and sunflower seeds in it. Daily grooming and exercise.

The week before the show they get a good clipping and mane pull.

The day before they are bathed, dried and rugged up. Plaits are done ready for rolling the next morning. Leg wraps go on too. Sard wonder soap has been recommended to me for stain removal. I use good old fashioned washing blue to bring out the sparkle.

Morning of the show it is roll the plaits, plait the tail, groom, paint the feet and wash off any marks that have happened overnight. Most of it is planning and elbow grease.

The rider is groomed as well. All clothing is checked a week before to ensure fit and suitability. 2 cloths are carried to the marshalling area, 1 for rider and 1 for horse. Don't like the dusty look.

I turn a filthy red flea bitten grey into a shiny grey that is admired.
