Hmmm... the mare is not completely shed out in that photo with the new baby. I know our red roan looks different in his winter coat (more solid) than after he sheds out. We also have a smutty buckskin QH that appears almost black bay in the winter until he sheds out. He's the one in my avatar!

Lori -- does that happen with that mare? Is she darker/more solid now than she will be when she is all shed out? Just curious.

Really the only roaning she gets anymore is on her rear end, and she starts showing that in mid-summer, late June into July. It will be fun to see this baby's coloration in July.
