He couldn't be a roan if Paco's daddy. He'd either be a sorrel/chestnut or be a red based gray But he is a tall little guy!

Dam's a red roan though, and she has thrown bay roans before...

That mare doesn't look at all like a red roan. Sorrel yes. Roan, no. Possibly a rabicino or sabino. I looked at your site, that's my biggest pet peeve with AQHA. No colors listed! But a friend has a gray they swear is a red roan because that's what she was registered as. PM me some photos of your mare. I looked at the last year's foal and see a gray. Still a cute baby regardless of color

Thanks AA. But this is the same mare 10 years ago w/her first foal. She's 13 this year.

Now that I'd call a roan But roans shouldn't end up solid sorrel though. Very interesting. This is our Roan Two Eyed Jack mare. Been the same color since she was 2.

I agree with the foal being a chestnut. It's AMAZING that the mare has gotten darker with age! However, due to what I think I see in her legs in the older picture, I think she was a very heavily ticked Rabicano, not Roan. Her legs don't look dark enough. The Rabicano easily explains her being darker now, and Rabicano "roaning" can vary greatly from year to year, and with age.

Yeah, you know JB I think you're right. I didn't look at her long enough to notice the roan on her legs, but in that old photo, there's the typical barring on her barrel and one of the photos of her on their site makes me think Rabicino or Sabino, but there's too much light on her to be certain.

Aren't her legs black though?? They look it in the pic. If they are, then she would be considered a bay roan. She looks more bay than red roan to me... it's hard to tell the details from pictures... Cheyenne is registered as a red roan, no Rabicano, or Sabino color options(boxes)to check for AQHA...

No, the legs just look very dark red. If the legs were black, they'd still be black (as would her mane and tail). The AQHA's never been one to be quick to add variants to the registration process. Just like when they didn't have a Bay Roan. APHA still doesn't allow you to register a horse as a sabino. Has to be registered solid or overo depending on the white it has.

I'd really like to see horses being registered on genotype, not phenotype Would sure make it much easier!

Wow! What a BIG boy!!! Congrats on the new baby and glad everything went well.

That's quite a difference in color on the mare. Her last years foal looks like a blue roan? Just with the darker winter coat. Does the mare stay solid looking like that all year long? Or does she look like a roan again once she sheds her winter coat?
