I don't like that... at all.

A horse needs to WARM up their muscles to work properly, if they are contantly feeling cold they will be tense.

I agree with FG. That would kind of be like trying to run with cold packs on your legs, keeping your muscles from warming up properly. I would look for something breathable instead.

The reinemen wool type pads are SUPER nice. I rode on the coast, loping and long trotting for up to ten miles + a day and it really kept my horse cool and confortable.

I have a concern with your answers and please correct me if my thinking is all wrong. Yall are all up north and I am in MS. Seems like the temp would be very different here. Would this have any bearing on your answer?

No the climate you are riding in doesnt necessarily change the effects that something cold does to muscles...

just from my general knowledge/concept of muscles, and what hot and cold does for muscles, I agree that it would seem that it will have a negative effect on the muscles of the back, and make the muscles tense up where instead you want the muscles relaxed and warmed up.

It gets up to a hundred degrees + in the summer here where I live. And I still wouldn't let that pad near my horses back except maybe for a cold therapy for an injury

The pad isn't really cold. It is moisture-wicking which means it pulls the moisture away from the body. I think the name is kinda deceiving. So, it is actually good for the horses back to get all sweaty and hot?

I was just going to comment on the same thing.

This pad isnt like taking an ice pack and using it as a pad. What it does is absorbs the sweat/moisture away from the body, therefore "cooling it". It doesnt really cool it, but people/animals sweat to help cool themselves off. Of course you want the horses muscles warm (try sitting outside in 45 degree weather, then going for a 3 mile jog without stretching or walking, just go run... not good for your body). The name is decieving.

I have a thermo-manager baby pad (from smartpak) and does virtually the same thing. Its one of the best pads that I bought. And its great for winter riding when the horses sweat, it helps keep them more dry.
