There are way too many people on welfare, like you said. The government should set up strict rules on who should be allowed to have it.

WIC does not buy much, but it helped with formula which was great, and I wasnt ashamed to be on it. My husband was in the Armed Forces, I stayed home with our child, so...then I feel like I am frowned upon for staying home with my children but thats a whole other post
Now we dropped $400 on groceries last weekend...it made me sick to my stomach. Then I see this FAT, PREGNANT, piece of **** in the store b*itching because her ACCESS (food stamps) wont pay for her BOTTLED OZARK WATER!!!!! WHAAAAAT???? Waddle you're fat behind to the houseware isle and buy a filter for you're sink!! And stop by the dr's on you're way to the store and get a tubal while you're at it...
But then I try not to be like that, because my husband works his behind off for our family and I have thought of assistance for groceries, as food is so much more expensive than it was just maybe, two years ago. What if I did?
That is what I was trying to convey on the WIC stuff. That is why I offered (when I go to use my next checks) to keep track of just how much WIC paid for. I believe it comes out to less the $50 per child. Which is NOT much more then a drop in the bucket. With you on the grocery thing... We are fine for the moment and I am praying that we make it through to hubby's pay-day without desperately needing anything. No matter what, my kids have food and my animals are fed. I WILL go without if I have to.

I've been working since I was 16 years old.

My parents have always been too poor to be rich, but too 'rich' to be poor.

Never qualified for any help, but we always lived paycheck to paycheck.

I'm an active duty Marine, & I'm on WIC. I qualify for it bc I don't make that much, really. It is a HUGE help to me. It saved me over $200 a month easily, & being a single mother, this is a HUGE help.

I also get help for childcare from the Dept of Social Services in my county. I only have to pay 10% of my BASE pay for childcare at a 5 star facility that charges about $160 a WEEK. I pay about $200 a month. I cannot tell you how much these programs benefit me & people I know.

But guess what? I HAVE A FRIGGIN JOB. I PAY MY FRIGGIN TAXES.

I believe I have the right to take advantage of the programs that I myself support.

I agree with you to an extent. There are many people who use and abuse the system. However, there are also many people who NEED it. I currently work with a student alternative program called Second Chance. Basically it is for students who don't fit in with the mainstream system for any reason. These students are dealing with drug and alcohol abuse problems, really bad families, and having to find housing at very young ages. The majority of these students are on student welfare because they have been kicked out of their homes at young ages (16-18) and cannot afford to pay their rent because they have to finish high school, cannot work enough because they need to be at school, and cannot get jobs that pay enough, or for that matter get a job at all in this recession. Getting welfare help does not mean they are lazy.

Working at Second Chance has given me a huge perspective change on the welfare issue. Yes, there are people who misuse it, but I believe there are just as many people who need it.

Amen to your ENTIRE post. Welfare is a GREAT program, if used appropriately...which it is, largely, not. That's a program that needs some reform.

You have every right. You're not abusing the system- you're using it as it is meant to be used. I also come from a family who was on all kinds of assistance in my later high school years when my parents divorced while my mom went back to school so she could support us. That's not abusing the system either- that's why the system was created...to help people get back on their feet. I believe the OP is talking about people who blatantly abuse the system in every possible way. Being in the medical field, I see it all too often, and know where the OP is coming from. Gotta love seeing the jokers who go to the food banks to pick up food and drive up in an Escalade. You need free food? Please.

I agreeing with everyone that said that there is abuse to welfare!

My view on it: My mom works 5 days a week. She works rotating factory work as its the only thing she can get. Instead of going onto welfare she tries to do the right thing and work.

Yet the woman next door on welfare can afford nice things for her children. They get new clothes and brand name things all the time. Did I mention there is 7 of them and only 5 of us?

My sisters are lucky to get a new pair of shoes once a year. Everything has to be taken really good care of or its unlikely they'll see a brand new pair for a few months.

We get economy brand foods..and they get top of the line brands..We get no name cookies, they get mr. Christie..

And we only make $50 more than the allowance onto welfare
