I agree, its too easy for people to make a "career" of living off benefits, but its all down to how the system works.

I have a low paid job and my partner is self employed, the effects of the recession hit my partners business at the start of this year. My wage paid the rent and a few small bills but we were having money off our parents for food & fuel to me get to work.

I rang the local council to say I didnt think I could pay the council tax for 1 or 2 months 'till my partners business picked up; and to see if there was any help we could get temporarily, even if it was something we had to pay back.

They said because we didnt have any children and we could afford our rent, they couldnt help.

Its like they encourage people in low paid jobs to have children, despite it being a less than ideal situation, with a child you can get more help, with another child you get a bigger house, car etc......

Its no wonder these people keep having children.

On the WIC thing... I am on it... I was on it with my older child, and I am on it currently with my two younger ones. Personally it was a lifesaver. I was not working (hubby FT job) as no jobs in the area pay enough to even cover what day care would cost. Anyways. When my youngest was born, he had acid reflux so bad he was vomiting EVERYTHING that he ingested. And I me EVERYTHING. Ended up the only thing he could keep down was some formula that cost $26+ a can. WIC saved us there. They paid for 8 cans of that a month for him. We had to cover the rest of it and things were tight, but I couldn't imagine trying it without WIC. And WIC does NOT pay for that much stuff. No where near $100 worth a month unless it is formula.

On the Food stamps... We tried getting on them at one point, was a last ditch thing because it was down to me not eating so the boys would get enough, and the woman looked at me and told me to either get pregnant and have another or have hubby get someone else pregnant and him have to pay CS! Lets just say I got out of that office before I could say something I would regret later.

Now We only get WIC for the two younger boys. When I go in on the 15 to get my WIC stuff from the store, I will keep track of how much each check was (and what it paid for) so you guys can accurately see what it pays for. And Yes, before I got married and had my boys I worked full-time and had a well paying job. I prefer to stay home with my kids and have Mommy-care not Day-care for them.

My husband and I just signed up for wic and I felt very strange being there. You could definitely pick out who was there for the help and who was there just to take whatever they could. The employees there were definitely not used to talking to people who really understood what was going on. It was just sad...

Ditto on telling who needs help and what not... Then you get the WIC people who are completely unwilling to work with with you. Went through that with the first WIC people I was with with my oldest. I worked full-time paid for day-care for him and was on WIC they would schedule me for the evenings after work, and then call two days before my appointment EVERY TIME and tell me I needed to be in at like 10am or some stupid thing. HELLO I HAD a FT job! Can't leave on short notice for that! That was why we scheduled int he evening. Their excuse? Oh "well we didn't want to have to wait for you to get here, so you have to be here at such and such a time or you no longer qualify." *insert swear words here* (BTW was a single mom at that time). I now drive 50+miles round trip to get to the WIC office I go to now. REFUSE to go to the one that is close to me. Can't stand the workers there.

The system is definitely out of hand. Don't get me started on health care either. My husband served our country for 29 years in the military. We spent months apart when he served over seas during Desert Storm and then many more months apart while he was away at sea for most of his career. He was prior enlisted, went to OCS, worked his way up the chain to become a Commander. He's a mustang, came through the ranks the hard way, earned every penny. When he was a young man they promised health care for life. Seems every year the government is taking and taking away. He still works as a civilian for the military, is still gone on a ship and we have supplemental policies to cover our health care expenses. Point being, he has worked his entire life, serving our country so our family can have health care and now everyone is supposed to get it for free? I kind of have a problem with that.

Don't get me wrong, I"ve never missed a meal and consider myself and my family very fortunate, but it didn't come from collecting from the government for sitting around on my bum and doing nothing.

I totally agree with you meljean, but be warned, some here don't see the career welfare-ers as a burden on us.

I see it daily. I work in a pharmacy, and medicaid pays for the MAJORITY of the medicines dispensed.

They sometimes have a .50 co-pay. Yep, they fuss about it. When people who work have 30.00 copays.

The system is definitely broken...and broke!

I don't know if you were referring to me or not! But I do have a problem with people on welfare that do not try and better themselves. When I was working nights at WallyWorld I would get very upset over the people who came through with nothing but junk food and microwave dinners (over $400 worth of JUNK) and proceed to pay with Foodstamps... And not a healthy food in sight. Kept a smile on my face, but boy was it hard.

Mine is not bad (4.00-7.00 for my monthlys) but that's because my DH's insurance is very good! Before I was married, it was 15.00. So not bad, but I don't go in and pitch a fit and scream out "Fifty CENTS??!!!!!!!" when I have to pay for it. Then they have a pack of smokes sitting in the console. Er, did you scream out "Four dollars and thirty seven CENTS??!!" at the cashier at the convenience store? My bet is no.

$4.37 for smokes? What are YOU smoking?

Try more like closer to $7.00
