![]() | i have a 6 year old mare that was skinny when i got her and my question is how do you tell if your horse is at a healthly weight. is a little rib showing a sign that she needs to put on more weight and what are the other signs of a too skinny horse. what are the signs of a too heavy horse? my mare is 16 hh tall and is currently eating 2 slivers of grass hay in the morning and 1 in the afternoon and 2 more in the evening plus she gets 3 cups of grain in the morning. she has put some weight on but i don't know what to look for to show that she is at a heathly weight and once she is there what do i do as in feed. do i keep the same amount of everything or cut out grain or cut back on hay or both? please help |

| Full Member | It depends on what breed your horse is. in thoroughbreds and ligher horses you should be able to see a little rib... but not all of them. you can see the hip bone and the spine clearly in a horse thats too skinny. in most horses you should be able to feel the ribs maybe even see a few but thats about it. |
