Unhappy Weight help

OK i've a got a slight problem. My mare's ribs, hip bone, and tail bone are starting to show. I know she needs to gain some weight, however she still has her fat pregnant stomach look to her. I can not exercise her because I still can not ride. Even though I regreted it I already increased her feed this morning by a pound to put some meat on her ribs and the other areas. Any suggestionson how to make her look normal without adding to her nonpregnant stomach?

What exactly are you feeding her? (lbs, protein, and fat percentages). My guess would be that her pregnancy weight didn't get up far enough to support her through lactation. Why are you regretting the increase in feed?

Increasing Grain is Excellent choice in lactating mares, as she needs the nutrients FAST and NOW!

Is she on a Mare and FOal, 16% feed? Let me know her hay and grain, and I'll come up with a diet for you and amounts to feed for a lactating mare. She's in her 2nd month of lactation right??

yeah, saturday she'll be in her 2nd month. Um to answer both of your questions Blackie usualy gets 3 lbs strategy twice a day and 2-3 flakes of hay once a day, plus pasture turn out. Today I increased it to 3 & 1/2 half lbs strategy twice a day and 3 & 1/2 fllakes of hay, plus I turned her out in the pasture to graze.

And to Dawn, I have major weight issues and I'm just scared because I really don't want her getting over weight, but I don't want her underweight as well.

During lactation, don't worry about over/under weight. When you begin to wean her, cut her back off her grain at that time.

You aren't feeding a lot. You can go up to 8-10lbs of strategy a day. If you can feed 3x a day, that would be better.
My gelding when working gets 7-8 lbs of grain a day. And a lactating mare needs twice what he needs in nutrition......

So just bump her up slow, but once you start seeing her fill in, keep her there until weaning.

Would I feed less per feeding if she ate 3x a day or the same amount?

Figure about 3 lbs a feeding, 3 times a day, that will put her at 9 lbs a day.
