Question wedge pad?

I have a new farrier doing my mare today, and she just called and told me that she didn't like the angle of my mare's hoof, that she thought the heels were low and she'd like to try a small wedge pad.

I haven't had any problems with the mare being lame, but should I just trust the farrier's judgement on this?

Yikes, many horses are naturally low heeled.

Is the angle of the hoof match the angle of the leg? if so, and she's never been lame, don't screw with it.

Ask him about the angles. I had a wedge pad on my horse for a while on one hoof that had some issues. Three trimmings later and we were able to take it off and it was fine.

I've noticied (In the last 8 weeks, maybe?) her toes looking long, and a little, um, "flat"? Her feet don't look the way they used to.

My farrier retired, and I've been having someone else do her for the past 3 months. My horse doesn't seem very happy with the new guy, and he's been unreliable, so I thought I'd try this girl. (She did my filly for me at the last show, and I was pleased with the way they worked together.)

She seems to think it will help her grow heel, and that we can take it off soon. She told me that the current angles aren't correct for my mare.

Run out there and see what she is talking about....

SOme people say my horse's angles aren't correct because they aren't on their "scale".

But they are correct for him.

Since you said you hae seen a difference with the last farrier, he may not have been trimming properly and took off too much heel, and it might be good to get the heel to get back to normal.

Without seeing hte issue, hard to really say now.

I've been having a problem finding someone who is both good AND reliable. This girl at least took the time to LOOK at my horse before re-shoeing her. (That can actually be a rare occurrance around here...) I did see a change in the shape of her hoof when the last farrier was doing her...

I've lost three great ones now due to retirement. (One retired to old age, one injured his hand in a hunting accident, then the last one was a younger guy who quit shoeing to spend more time with his family--he had a day job and was shoeing on the side.) Am I just driving them off?!?

I'll look for his name. I don't remember who I've talked to lately. We called several that were charging $150 for a set of shoes!

Last time I used him, I wasn't happy at all. (Course I had just broke up with him too. LOL)
