now this is very true but there are some exceptions. Jacqueline was born in a thunderstorm. she was on a slope and the ground was very slick. There was no way she could stand on her own. I stepped in and held her still as she struggled to get up

ST, even in the slick, you should have let her figure it out. I bet you anything, she would eventually have gotten up. Many foals are born during thunderstorms. It is the NORM. SOmething about storms keeps predators in, so the horse's naturally prefer to foal out during these times as there are less predators out and about.

OOo I got something for you BW- should you help a foal if it's born by a pond?

NO, not unless they are IN the pond when they are born, which I've never heard of such a thing. Or if they stumble in and cannot get back up.

She gets grain every other day. Is that enough?

well you've heard of it now!

Sharon had a friend whose mare gave birth close to a pond and the baby kept falling with every attempt to stand and drowned

ST, come on, use some common sense. If the foal IS in danger, then yes, help them. But if it is just an "inconvenience", then let them figure it out.

Maggie, you should never feed every other day. Either feed daily or not at all.

I would move to feeding daily.

How much does she get in a feeding?
