He's cute, its really hard to say anything about his movement because he's so inconsistant, he trots for a few strides then walks, I can't ever get a good veiw of how he moves. He's looking good in showmanship, but if you don't mind I'd just like to say that you need to hold your arms up at a 90 degree angle, the way your holding them its going to throw off his balance, which will hurt more than help in the end. Here is a great article on showmanship that one of the other members (Phorelockless) wrote. http://www.lpph.org/showmanship |

Your showmanship looks pretty good, but I actually think you have his head a little too low (never thought I'd say that lol). You're hunching over when you set up, back, etc. Instead just stand up straight, with your arms in proper position (about 90 degrees) and cue him from there. He should naturally learn to stay even with your hand. Otherwise I think you're doing a great job with him. I'm seriously impressed by how well he holds his pivot foot. |

| Senior Member | Are you talking about the video of him at liberty?? cuz that was just that... i wanted to know what you thought of him: he jog, trot, and cantered... hes not going to stay consistent without me out there making him.

He's cute. For the SMS you need to have your hands @ a 90 degree angle and his head is to low it needs to be about level. Everything can be quicker and sharper , but that just comes with time. You're doing a nice job with him!

So this is the famous KC! I think he is super cute. His head is definitely too low right now, you want his ears level with his withers, just like when you're riding him. Your arms need to be at a 90 degree angle and you should be a bit straighter when you jog next to him. You look a little cramped and forced, you want your "strides" to be fluid and long. haha if that makes any sense. Also, you should try practicing your pivot without poking his side. After 3 months of doing this, I think he ready to move on. So just poke him when he starts to bend and isn't straight anymore. When he pops his shoulder towards you, that's when you poke him. Other than that, do it like you would at a show. You should try pull turns! They are super fun. Make sure he plants his left hind when you do it and keep him straight.

He is very cute It's hard to say anything about his movement, just because there's not enough time to judge before he breaks when he's at liberty. He's cute in the showmanship. He looks like he respects you and works/tries hard for you. The things that other people have already mentioned need some improvement. Your hands should be up at a 90 degree angle. I think that's why he holds his head so low too, you may be pulling down on the chain and just having your hands low signals him to go low- so really he is being a good boy and follwing your hands, but pick your hands up and he will pick his head up. You need more speed and momentum in everything you do with him, especially trotting and walking. I understand that he's green and you don't want to go to quick for what he's ready for, but I can see that you've done a good job at getting the basics down for him... now it's time to speed it up. Having momentum will help with everything, and will especially help him set up quicker. My old mare who was completely solid in showmanship, would take forever to set up if I'd just been standing around with her, because her mind just wasn't there and she'd pick two positions for her foot and keep alternating between them, not paying attention at all. But having them 'in gear' and working with momentum will keep their mind there. My pattern coach, and especially her mom who helped me with showmanship quite a bit (she's more harsh and isn't afraid to yell at you ahha but it really helps!) used to always yell at us when they'd see us giving our horses all the leadline and just letting them 'lolly-gag' down to showmanship practise. She was always like "Now how do you expect those horses to pay attention to you and work for you when you've just let them lollygag down to this arena... go for a trot and wake them up!!". It's so true though, you need to have that momentum going and speed will help you there. The speed is especially needed in the walk/trot/back. You can work on adding speed in your spin now too, by the looks of things, as long as you keep pushing him forward in the spin and helping him out with the shoulder as he needs it, as you don't want to add too much speed and have him leave his shoulders behind. |
