Vet Visit

I'm planning on having the vet come out in the near future for my gelding's vet exam.

I want the following services done:
-Insurance Exam
-Teeth Floating
-Fecal Egg Cout
-Tetnus
-Rabies
-Encephalitis?

I live in Oregon, are there any other vaccines/services my horse should have? Once I schedule his exam i'll definetly ask the vet what he thinks should also be done..

I'd advise West Nile vaccine... I think like here, West Nile is not yet all that common in Oregon, but I'm told it's coming, and we've had a couple cases this year in Eastern WA.

If it's the first time you've gotten West Nile, there may still be a booster recommended after 30 days, and then annually.

While he's drowsy from the teeth, have the vet clean his sheath real good.

There have been some cases in Oregon especially Eastern Oregon. I feel the vaccine is important especially since last year 3 birds in my town died from it and Vector control is stressing the issue this year.

I agree with this but I would also add to request the Prevnile instead of the fort dodge one no semi annual booster needed

Thanks... I figured if Eastern WA had it, then Eastern Oregon would too. I'm on the West side.

So far, I don't think we've had it come over the pass but I've been vaccinating for it already for a few years because they say it'll be here anytime.

He last had his sheath cleaned in march. Next year i'll have the vet do it the same time as the floating. Thanks for the good idea!

He had the WNV vaccine in march. If I schedule the exam in October, should I ask for the semi-annual booster? I'm not sure which vaccine it is (Prevnile/ Fort Dodge).

Is it nessiary to get the Encephalitis vaccine?

Here is the break down for Oregon WN infected horses

2005 46 horses infected
2006 35 horses infected
2007 16 horses infected
2008 0 horses infected at this time

For Washington the map that I found shows Avian, animal or mosquito infections but doesn't give numbers or what was infected.

http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/west...trol08Maps.htm

I used a different resource for Oregon. http://www.oregon.gov/DHS/ph/acd/dis...e/survey.shtml

On the other vaccines, I let my vet decide and advise me on which package of vaccines is appropriate. That's part of what I'm paying him to know. I sure don't know better.

WashingtonBay; I'm planning on asking my vet what vaccines my horse should get. I was just wondering if anyone else in the area vaccinated for it. ;D
