Very quick question, but I do need answers NOW.

Western type halter classes. How is the mane done. Out or banded into the diamond pattern? Tails are natural?

Is it full moon time again? Did the cereal truck overturn and fruitloops got spilt?

The mane should be banded, but not into the diamonds, just at the crest. Tail is loose. Let me find a pic for you

Thanks Donna. Now in hunter classes how should the mane be? Please don't tell me plaited. I will have to do a rush job tommorrow is it is.

She's doing western and hunters at the same show? I would either leave the mane banded or if its a smaller show not band at all and just leave it loose

She is doing halter and hunters at the same show. It is only a small one held by the local western club. They have one halter class for unregistered geldings so that is what she is doing. The rest of the halter classes are for things like paints, quarter horses and appys.

when we showed halter, it was all natural, but that was some time ago, before banding became the rage. If you are cross showing in English or Western, like we used to do, we just left the manes and tails as is or showed Western first, then braided for English.
At fun shows or smaller shows, it is okay not to braid if the horse's mane and tail are neat with no fly away ends.

If its a halter class, not showmanship, I would just comb it neatly and leave it loose. A little spray gel or hairspray should do the trick. If you had the time and the inclination you could braid for the hunter classes, but here we really don't braid for smaller shows.

For hunter, if it's pulled or trimmed, it should be fine loose.

Good luck to Chick!
