V Poorly Horse

Hello im Liz, 21 with a 16.1h thoroughbreed from the uk.

Ive never used a forum before and i might be a bit slow.

My friend has got a v poorly horse who seems to be having spasms and just falling on the floor. He was seen by the vet who think it may be an inner ear infection has anyone ever heard or seen anything like this? It seems more than an ear infection to me.

AQHA - HYPP INFORMATION

a horse doesn't have to be a registered quarter horse. Many grade horses carry it too due to their initial breeding at one time.

Is this a form of disease that a coloured cob could get? Is is apparent at all times or just now and then?

Depends on the bloodlines that were used to create the actual cob.

It appears intermittantly, can appear all the time.....it varies from horse to horse and the diet the horse is on.

Could be epileptic seizures. I highly doubt an inner ear infection will drop a horse into seizure-like descriptions.

West Nile can do it.....Any of the Encephalitises...neurological issues.....Tying up syndrome can drop a horse...there are various theories on what causes it.

What you need, is an actual blood test DURING the seizure. hard to do, but if you can find the trigger, that helps the diagnosis as well.

A bit more information on when, what happened the hour before the episodes will help us get you questions for your friend for her vet.

You said Poor horse...as in under weight? Lack of muscles can collapse a horse down just from exhaustion....lack of proper nutrients, a miss balance of nutrients in an under weight horse can trigger seizure episodes.

Thanks for the help.

He is having spasms and wobbling over all over the place. Hes fine in himself still eating not very alert though. It is when he is moving one of his legs that he falls over. He just topples over but get striaght back up. He doesnt seem to be in any pain but that is probably due to antibiotics and pain killer. The other suggestion from the vet was either Kidney faliure or brain tumour. His sight has also worsened too. It sound more to me like a brain tumour but Im not best up on this sort of information.

The vet is coming back to assess him later on this afternoon if they suggest it is a brain tumour shouldnt they do a scan before they put him to sleep or would it be best to put him out of his misery as he is really hurting himself when he is falling over.

Liz

p.s the spasms and toppling over happened pretty much straight away.
