Thumbs down Uterine Infection.

Hi, I'm totally new on here, I've been lurking for a long time, but this is my first post.

So anyway, my mare is away being bred about 10 hours away, so the breeder did a prebreeding exam and a culture last week and I got the results back today and she has a heavy e coli infection in her uterus. The vet said they'll run antibiotics once they figure out which strain it is and what it's weakness is. (ex - penicillin). I don't really have a question or anything, I'm just venting. This is my first breeding experience and I'm pretty sure I know where she got the infection from, I just hope the antibiotics clear things up ASAP and we don't have to get a flush done.

The vet also said she isn't infertile right now, but if left untreated she will be. She said she's a high risk mare as of right now (unlikely to take without the meds), but to breed her while she's on the antibiotics and hope she takes.

So who else has had dealings with this sort of thing? Is it fairly common?
I know there's e coli in the intestinal tract and that it's normal, I also know it's fairly easy to have the culture swab contaminated. I don't doubt she actually has an infection in there, since I saw a gelding on a few occasions mount and penetrate her.

Either way, anyone care to offer their experiences? Information would be greatly appreciated.

Mares can get uterine infections. In my experience, you do flush...2 or 3 times about a week apart...to get it cleared up. She could infect the stallion if he breeds her while she is still infected. I wouldn't recommend breeding her until she is in the clear. That could take close to a month.

Maybe you should bring her back home and have her treated from your place to save costs. Then have her checked to be ready for breeding and send her back to breeders.

Deb - the vet treating her said it would be alright to breed her to him anyway? I'm a little confused.

Ryle - thanks for the links, very informative.
