Images: 1 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Using dog shampoo on horses? I want to whiten my fleabitten mare's mane, and tail. I know there are tonnes of horse shampoos that do this, but they're all really expensive. I was wondering if I could just use a dog shampoo that does the same thing?

| Senior Member+ | I have an organic shampoo that can be used on dogs, cats and horses. It smells like oranges.

| Senior Member+ | It should be fine. We use horse and people shampoo on our dogs, and we wash our horses with Ivory sometimes. We have three geldings, and Ivory is a good soap to clean their sheathes with because it's so mild, so we figured it would be fine on their body. It works pretty well, but I really don't know if it's a good whitener or not.

| Senior Member+ | OH...one thing to think of is you want to be careful what you use on a horse because some soaps could strip away thier "natural oils" from their skin that they need for protection (of some kind...can't remember excatly what at this moment). But that was one thing my vet told me when I got my first horse.

| Full Member | I know for a fact that human shampoo should not be used on dogs. Our PH level is different so it tends to dry their skin out and make their hair brittle. Since some dog shampoos say it's safe for horses then I would tend to assume that dog and horse PH levels are similar. I guess in a pinch I would use it but using a nice conditioner after. “Don’t use human shampoos to try to save money; they are formulated for people and have the wrong pH level for horses,” says Sue Herbes, manager of the Libertyville Saddle Shop in Libertyville, Ill. |

Right now her legs are stained pink from the red clay around here, and her mane and tail are yellowed. Actually, I have another question: If I put lemon juice in her mane and tail, would that be a safe way to bleach the yellow out?
