| Senior Member | Using a Neck Sweat
I was thinking of getting a neck sweat to refine my horses neck for halter. I have no clue how to use one. could anybody tell me how to use it and for how long and where to buy a decent one. Also any other tips for refining the neck/throat latch area would be great! thanks

I made a step by step post a while back on how to properly use neck sweats, search under grooming and you should find it. I may need to reload the pictures though. |

The person in the above post did a very thorough post on this topic, but there is a lot of different sweats she puts on. I will give you a brief description of how we sweat our horses, with good results as well. Buy a neck sweat(the one we have looks like it is neoprene, not sure though) First you will make sure the neck is brushed clean. cover the neck in this topical that is called "World Champion Neat Neck" (it helps the horse to sweat more; therefore losing more of the thickness of the neck) put on the neck sweat and lunge the horse for his normal lunging session (we lunge for 15-20 mins) Tie horse up in stall or wherever you normally tie and let him stand there for about 30 mins - do not take off the neck sweat! (the recommended time when using the topical). After 30 mins take the neck sweat off and rinse the horse's neck off- be sure and get the topical off. We have always had great results with this and always have trim necks when we show! Good luck! |

We mix glycerine and lysterine (50/50). Works great and much less expensive that the prepared stuff, so far we've never had any irritation from it and it's been runny enough that we could apply it with a spray bottle so your hands don't get icky (tried gloves, too thick and they slip right off). So far we've been lucky, only had to sweat one stallion we had. Everyone right now's nice and thin naturally.

I personally haven't ever used a sweating product besides for an actual neck sweat. I mean just the neoprene and the horse and some work generally works pretty darn good. A halter horse pretty much requires daily grooming so do a good grooming of at least the neck area, apply the sweat nice and snug, then work the horse with the sweat on. Leave it on for an hour, then rinse the horse's neck and brush all over when dry. When I worked in california we worked the horses every second day. Some of the horses had 2 or 3 sweats and a throatlatch sweat applied depending on the horse. They had a 1/2 mile track so were able to trot and canter the horses behind a quad rather than lunge them which I think was easier on their legs. Good luck |
