**Updated - He's Home!** Adopting A Mustang From BLM - Anybody Done This

Anybody ever adopted from a holding facility (I am seriously considering challenging myself and adopting a mustang from Ridgecrest). Specifically I am wondering how they go about letting you select your mustang from the corrals. I mean, obviously you'd want to get a close look as possible at the horse to evaluate soundness / conformation. I've e-mailed them too and will be setting up an appointment to go have a look at the facility / talk to the manager.

When I adopted Spirit and Jenny(Donkey) it was out in Thousand Oaks. They came from Ridgecrest/China Lake and were trucked down after getting shots, wormed, coggings pulled, and gelded. They set up a couple shoots and like 10 small corrals holding about 10 horses each in rows. You could walk up and down past the corrals. There wasn't room to move so there wasn't really anyway to check soundness. The horses/donkeys had 'collars' with plastic tags with an ID number. You picked the ones you were intrested in and then went to the 'office' a storage container and if the horse wasn't taken, they'd give you a pack of papers to sign and then take you 125 and then have the cowboys there runn your horse down the shoot in to a stock, put on a halter, and shoo him into the trailer.

I don't know if its the same at the holding facility, but i don't think it would be much different. except they have more room to move.

also, you have to be approved if your adopting from the main holding facility and have to have an approved trailer. and they check after one year before giving you ownership.

Are Ridgecrest horses and different? Because I love mine. One of the best horses i've ever had/worked with

Well...it's official. I am submitting an application to the BLM.

Only issue I have to work out is the trailering. They will trailer for free from the corrals to my facility but I am not sure their stock trailer will fit where I need it to fit in order to unload straight into a corral...and they said it has to be a stock trailer (even though our 2 horse trailer IS a stock trailer (basically) once you remove the divider)....so I have to figure that out.

Wish me luck Does anybody (except my partner) think I am crazy?

Good luck! And no, I don't think you're crazy at all. BLM Mustangs can be great horses if they're treated well and trained correctly.

Someday I plan on adopting one too, natural selection should play a role in their soundness, both physically and mentally

Good luck!!! You better post pics when you get one

LOL...when I told him 2 horse over the phone he said they didn't accept them. I think he misunderstood that it was a slant load, warmblood size, with removable divider...very roomy and MUCH safer IMO than any stock trailer. I'm going to send pictures of the trailer...I'd rather just bring the horse home myself...
