Update... yes UPDATE!!! On Jeda (remember her, lol) Need advice and opinions!!!

OK, well its been a while (A long while ) since she hurt herself so I'll do a quick recap...

In January of this year Jeda hurt her leg. Badly. I dont know how she did it... it was on her hind leg she tore open her leg losing everything down to the bone!!! All her tendons were completely ripped apart etc. All you could see on her leg under the hock was white (bone) and red (blood) it was horrific...

I got the vet out immediatly (as you would ) and she was given all the injections etc... Put straight on 2 courses of antibiodics (which I had to give her!!!) and had to have minor surgery.

It was then a long process of getting the wound to fill in and all the tendons to heal etc. Took MONTHS for that to happen and it was so horrible changing the dressings everyday (all 4 layers) and the sight was sickening!!! but it had to be done.

Now 6 mths on the wound has filled in well and the all thats left is some major scarring, lots of proud flesh and still a small amount of scabbing (still healing).

That isnt concerning me. What I am a little concerned about is the fact that the leg still looks very swollen!!! She is having no problem moving on the leg at all and gallops around all day on it. Never limp etc. Just looks swollen.

What is going on??? Why could it be swollen??? What should I do???

its still swollen most probably because it is still healing i think probably once there isnt any scabbing or proud flesh it should go down

just make sure though that it does not get infected as this could cause swelling an also will prolong the healing time

glad to hear shes getting better im sure she will be the old jeda in no time!

*tell's her she must give her an extra large carrot from me*

Are you working on removing the proud flesh? I wonder if that could be playing a role in the swelling. Have you spoken to the vet? Does the swelling go down once it's been cold hosed and walked?

No, Ive been leaving the proud flesh alone. I have not spoken to the vet since she was still getting constant treatment (if that makes sense). No the swelling doesnt go down after hosing and walking.

Thank you

The proud flesh can be removed by using a copper sulphate solution and paint it on the proud flesh. It will eat it away without causing too much pain to the horse (mostly painless). You can also buy Debrisol (found at Horseland or Saddleworld) that has a similar effect though it will eat away the hair surrounding the wound. Don't stress too much as the hair grows back.

if the tendons were that damaged it could take a year or more to heal - also the circulation may never be good in that leg and the swelling may stay . I guess your vet could tell you the best since he may have seen many before and after injuries and have a better idea of how the healing of your horse compares. If the proud flesh is bad it needs to be removed or controlled to continue healing - again your vet has been treating the horse so he would know best. If you want to use a good product there is one sold thru vets called Derma gel- excellent for proud flesh and for speeding healing. I would still ask your vet to check this out and see if he thinks its suitable for the type of wound your horse has. Good luck to you and your horse though.
