Do you think the hoof just wore down past the top of the crevice? Since you were soaking it I just wonder if it got soft and wore down that much.

Excuse my lack of knowledge but I'm not sure what this means. What part of the hoof would wear down? Under the hoof wall? Does soaking cause this? And...is this a good thing or a bad thing?

I am assuming you were looking at the bottom of the hoof seeing the crevice, well if the horse wore down the hoof (naturally trimmed himself) then he may have basically trimmed out the crevice (I am assuming it wasn't that deep). Soaking the hooves can soften them up, so if the hoof was in need of trimming he may have did it himself (just trying to come up with some theory).
I guess a good way to tell is to look at that same hoof, there may be less of that crack you see on the outside (it would be shorter)

Just wanted to pass on the good news....my farrier was out today and says Red's hoof looks great. No signs of the white powdery stuff and his hoof is growing out beautifully.
