I am so, so SO pleased. My bond with this horse is really developing. ALL because we are stepping back and taking things in baby steps. She is learning from me and I from her. Bah, anyway! We took a couple days off from our practice due to rain and human lives getting in the way. Today we started with yielding the hind and fore quarters on each side. A few good steps and then then move to a new body part. We also do backing up. When we first started I only asked for one step and then I removed my whip tapping. I have moved up to two steps for the lateral yeilding and now 4-5 backing steps. She is still anticipating my touch at the hind quarter and taking too many steps. I can tell it is the "oh I know what you want, let me just swing my butt over" kind of move. We worked on not moving until she got the tap. I pointed and rubbed but I didn't reward her for moving until I tapped. When I ask for her to go out on the circle, I open my lead arm out away from my body and hold the rope in front of her. Then I tap the shoulder of the inside and take it away when she moves out and forward. She is really getting it! We can do circles at the walk until I say "whoa" now. She will stop and turn when I say "whoa". Counterclockwise is still the better side. We did backing and yielding, 10 circles in each direction and then repeated. I give her lots of praise and make sure she knows she is doing the right thing. She is now working at the end of a 12 foot lead. When can we add trotting? I am SO not wanting to move too fast and mess this up. I want to get some video or pictures...

Yay! I'm so glad things are going well for you and Tiff. I'm glad to hear that you're starting to bond with her more. I'm thinking I really need to go back to step one and start over with a few things with Breez. She made me SO frustrated this evening I felt like crying. Anyway, once again, I'm glad to hear things are going well for you. I can't advice you on the trotting issue, because I hurry too much in my training.

Heather when you have COMPLETE control at the walk you move onto the trot sounds like you "might" have it now LOL Good job so far it is always tougher with a older horse who has known then been let go or that was done wrong to start with

I am going to do a repeat of yesterday, today. If it goes just as well. I will start adding a few trot steps next week. I am planning for pictures and video too. I have another question, how come she is changing her personality. She was very standoffish and not affectionate at all. For the first year she was here. Now after 2 weeks of practicing lunging, she's coming to me for pets and really seeming happier. I have spent at least an hour every day with her grooming, feeding and such. But the addition of work??

The second reason Tiff is probably changing in personality is now she's starting to decide you ARE the herd leader as you make her work. It is not the WORK she enjoys persay, but she DOES like feeling secure in a strong leader When you're working as a team, someone has to lead the team, a strong team leader builds a winning team and a happy team. You're building a happy team, good job
