| Senior Member+ | Update on Lady (mare that foaled early)
Well, I kind of have an update, but I really want to get more details because I am not understanding what it means entirely. Yesterday they had said she should be able to come home today because she was "flushing clean" and everything looked fine. This morning they called and said that she would need to be there at least three more days because she was "flushing dirty". In response to whether this was most likely an isolated incident or if all the mares could be at risk, the answer was that it was more than likely isolated and that this mare had apparently gotten into something.....ummmm...what could she have gotten into that the others would not have? They are all in the same pasture, they all eat the same food and hay.... I am just not understanding. I hate getting updates second hand where I can not directly ask questions to the vet for clarification in my head! What does "flushing dirty" mean? What could she have gotten into that would have caused any of this? With no test results back on the placenta...how can they venture to guess anyway? |

Who were you speaking to? The receptionist? Vet tech? I find that often times, messages end up being sent by receptionists with just enough 'vet' knowledge to be dangerous. Even talking to the techs is a hit and miss. Is there anyway that you can talk to the vet directly? Express your concerns, get straight answers? What she likely meant by flushing dirty is that they're flushing the uterus out and it's coming back with 'something' in it (blood, puss, could be any number of things). In all truth, the lady that you spoke to probably has absolutely no idea what caused it or what the possibilities are. I would demand to speak to the vet. |

He also said that the vet he was talking to (there are several at this clinic) said that she thought it was isolated to one mare because she does not believe it is viral, but rather fungal. When I asked about what she was thinking the mare could have gotten into and which end it entered from, he did not know. Since Lady is an older mare (14) with multiple pregnancies under her belt, I was thinking maybe a looser vulva allowed something in that shouldn't be there? I was checking out Cat and Blue's vulvas and Cat's is sealed so tight it almost looks puckered, but she is a maiden mare. Blue has had three foals so hers looked a little loose and also looked a little swollen which made me worry.....but dad said nothing looked out of the ordinary to him.

It could be an infection of some kind, thats probably likely and might have something to do with why she foaled early. Where I work my employers run a repro center and so I have seen/been around for lots and lots of flushes. Sometimes on older mares, getting them cleaned up to breed can be an issue. Of course I dont know much about your mare, breeding history, if you guys bred her or she was AI'd (and again if you did or someone else). Or how many times you've bred her. She may be a mare that should be flushed before and a while after breeding initally and then possibly caslicked (spelling there is prob way off, going with how it sounds...lol). Its hard to say and its all speculation, however I am sure they can get her sorted so she can come home. Poor mare is probably feeling the loss of her filly, I feel so sad for the mares...

Lady is 14. She has never had any trouble with breeding or foaling in the past. I believe we got her when she was 4 and every year she has had a healthy foal except for a couple of times when we left her open for reasons that had nothing to do with her. She was left open last year and did not take the first breeding for this year, but settled on the second. The vet has always talked about how good and toned she feels whenever she is checking her. As long as she will be healthy, it won't hurt my feelings if she is never bred again. She has been a better mare and produced such great foals, that she deserves to retire early if that is what she wants or needs...lol...maybe I am just emotionally spent and putting my feelings off on her....

Lady got to come home yesterday. She was flushing "clean as a whistle". They said there was a tear on her cervix, but they are not sure how long it had been there or if it was of any relevance to this incident. As of now, the tests on the placenta have still not come back. |
