well, thank you all very much. it is really hard I finally had to ask the really hard questions...Why do I want a stud? Is it so I can say I own a stud? Is it so everyone will say what a great job I've done with him? How much is it about have the stigma of stallion ownership vs what's best for the horse, the community and the breed as a standard.

Best for the horse,
Currently he's isolated and not able to socialize with the other horses. He paces a lot this year and I noticed that he's chewing on the stall. He is not happy!

Best for the community

I have three teens living at home and the community will not be safe as long as they do stable chores. my son has let the boys out on more than one occasion and I have to get up in my "next to nothings" to run around wearing nothing but a lead rope to get them back in. thank god they never left our yard it's not even fenced on the road side! What is someones mare breaks out and tears up our yard because he's calling to them (thank goodness he's not a screamer) We have terrible weather here that can blow a barn or fence down. Then what?

Best for the Breed
He's not foundation. He has decent bloodlines but, he's not proven, never seen a show ring, he has his flaws, I will not be able to promote him nor do I have the knowledge of the competition/performance horses industry to do justice by him. Also I love him to much to show him to death, milk him dry and make him a business. Not all breeders do but I do not have a mentor in the business and don't want to sc.rew my horse up or my not-so-known name by getting involved with the wrong folks.

So until I learn the ropes there is no need to put this gorgeous boy through my growing pains. AND... I was able to get him an appointment for after lunch today. so all I need to do is hear back from the farrier and it's off the the doc's we go.

As for regrets...I may always regret that I didn't get to breed him to the perfect mare but I'll never regret that my Stallion hurt someone because I didn't know what I was doing. I'll never regret that I didn't get to take him somewhere because he was a stud. And I wont regret him being unhappy in his stall all alone when there are other horses on the property that are together as a herd.

It worked! I Just talked to the farrier. She's pretty sure the mare took so she said to go for it. So, off to the vets we go...

Sounds like you have made the best decision for your situation - congratulations on that and the best of luck! I hope your farrier's mare is bred for your sake (and nerves! )

edited: you posted as I did! Glad things worked out! Fast healing for your boy!

It done, I'm still a little sick to my stomach and I hate that we had to do it but we did. I stayed with him for the entire process, he was a trooper and came through great. Now starts the aftercare. I'll probably be asking a ton of questions about that soon.

Today he is supposed to be stalled. Tomorrow he will be in the turn out (90x50) and allowed to move around a bit more and day three he will get worked several times a day for about 10 to 15 min to keep the swelling down and allow the drainage to continue. let' hope it goes that easy. As soon as he stops have studdy behavior and I feel the hot wire will be enough for him he'll go out with the other gelding, and then once the weaning is done they all be together (fingers crossed)
