Humm if she foals on the eclipse, that will be something to incorporate into the foals name! Cathy

I am jealous of all ya'll that can actually see your mare's bag, lol... Blaze has a TON of fuzzy white fur right at the junction of her legs, so I can't see a thing, and she will NOT let me touch it (kicked me last time, in fact) Anyones gues is as good as mine.

haha, well mine's a notorious cow-kicker and my camera doesn't have an LCD display, so I just quickly dart in, point and shoot with my arm stretched out, and hope for the best. I'm getting pretty good at it by now. She hasn't yet tried to kick me while photographing, but I'm not going to risk it.

BTW Cathy, that's an excellent idea about incorporating eclipse into the name. Keeping fingers crossed for an eclipse foal

This may sound strange, but we had an angry mare once at the vet's house I worked at. She had a paint stallion named Dusty's Deck and my cousin was boarding/breeding her mare there. We tried to check her udders, and get some milk for a testing kit. She of course tried to whop us!

What we had to do @ the same time:

-Twitch her top lip(just kind of twist it to keep her more focused on her lip that whatever youre doing under her)
-Have someone pick up one of her front legs. She cant kick you with a back one if she is standing on 3 legs already!

Don't count on that! You have NEVER seen a horse get around with one leg held up the way that mine does! She can practically lay all the way down, and all of a sudden these huge muscles bulge waaayyy out ans hse gets back up. It would blow your mind! And it went on for an hour or more (first trimming on an unhandled mare, lol!)

I have tried the whole camera thing, but there really is a LOT of hair on my mare's belly and I have not yet been successful, lol

That sounds a lot like my experience with this mare. She's the only one that behaves like this. She was 14 years old when I got her, so she obviously has issues from previous ownership. My others were all young when I got them and have none of her bad habits. As soon as she foals and starts to wean, I'm going to work on her.

I don't have to worry about hair like you do...mine have their winter coats but not too extreme. Plus, my mare is shedding like crazy.

That is a huge coincidence! Blaze too was 14 when I got her. Her previous owners didn' t do anything with her And she was there for ten years. She is going for 30 days of training at weaning time. My Mini Pumpkin was trained by me, and is a gentleman.

Wouldn't it be neat if we both got babies on the same day!

Good luck with everything,
Kristina

Hey Kristina!

With all the other coincidences, it would only be fitting that they foal on the same day

Good luck to you and Blaze, too!

I can't remeber is this Blaze's first baby? If so just be aware that her being so sensitive to being touched on the udders can result in problems with her allowing the foal to nurse. If she has had babies in the past with no nursing issues the you are most likely ok but if not just be prepared with a bunch of tricks up your sleeve to get her to allow the foal to nurse.

Edit...just found your other thread. Sounds like she is an experienced mama so shouldn't have any worries

day 328 photos

Here she is this morning. Overnight she developed what looks like edema in front of her udder. From 5:00 p.m. yesterday to 7:00 this morning, she pooped 10 piles in her stall. Looks like some pawing on the ground going on, as well.
