Thumbs down UPDATE: ADDED PICS - More Kimberly & Stevey Pics/Video

(Thursday)
So, I rode again today. I use pictures/video as a trianing tool to see what I'm doing wrong, etc. So I looked long and hard at the pics below (See Tuesdays post at bottom of this post) and Obviously, have a lot to work on. I really don't ride in my hands, tho it certianly does look that way from Tuesdays pics. You'll see NO contact today as I was trying to show Stevey its not necessary to pull. So, the loose rein and no contact is intentional in these pics from today. Also, I'm still working on sitting up and getting that dumb heel of mine UNDER me! I felt like I was doing these things today! Anyway... here's todays pics for comparision.....Hopefully there is SOME improvement at least.

You'll see in one pick the c*ap he pulls with this head toss/pull. Its a really unflattering pic, but I wanted to show some of what we're trying to work thru. We really try to not pull back, and instead Half-halt, Half-halt, Soften. Any other ideas? We've also been working more with the side reins on the lunge, hopefully that will help a bit as well.

Thursday Pics:

*************
(Tuesday) So, countdown to show season is here. I'm gonna bust my butt to get ready, I think the first show I'll be riding in is in June. Here are a couple pics from today, and a video. Not sure if this should be in training or critique...I'm more looking for what you notice I need to focus my work on.
This is what I see:
  • I'm chair legged, need to get my leg under me.
  • Stirrup on ball of foot, not so far back
  • Sit up futher, too far forward
I also know people are going to comment about my hands. I was actually working them a lot more today then usual...Stevey (Believe it or not) was quite hot today And was doing a lot of pulling, so I, in turn, was doing a lot of bending half halts.

(Sorry about the poor photo quality, it was nasty out today so we rode inside, it was dark and really dusty )

Video: (Removed, link not working, check back later)

Apart from what you said you need to not lock your hands down they need to be lifted higher and allow him to move properbly. You seem to be leaning on his mouth alot which i no you have explained but i have noticed this before! You also sit to far down on your bum and need to bring your legs back! The vid doesnt work but he is very cute!

aww the video was removed! Anyways you two look great you can really tell he was hot! Shorten your stirrups a hole and crank those heels down, and it will help you bring your lower leg back! Not to mention your wrists are flat you should be "holding a coffe cup" sith thumbs up and that will gve your hand some more softness.! Lookin good you two!

I agree. He's a puller, so sometimes its a battle. I typically will half halt, hold, hold, soften, repeat. He was especially hot today too. I'll take more on Thursday and hopefully we'll see a difference

Thanks MZ!

PS...fixing the video now, check back in a minute

1.pic|look up and around(not sure where your eyes are, maybe they are up already?).
Hands up with thumbs on top, heels down

2.pic|it looks you are pulling him and he is pulling you.Is he strong?Try to post lower and slow.Again, your hands are twisted to the inside.and your heels could be down more.

3 pic|everything mentioned above

4 pic|are you in a 2 point possition or half seat?if not you need to SIT back, deep into the saddle.Your butt should not come out.

Your horse could use its hindquaters alot more and get into a rounded frame.Right now he doesn`t seem to be on the bit.Not sure if it is just the picture+day or if this is a constant issue.Does his tack fit properly?if you can rule pain issues out try to do lots of circles, serpentines, figure 8,and transitions.

It seems like you are stretching your foot/leg out to reach the stirrup, so you might get into better form if you shorten up your stirrups a little. That could make all the difference in the world and you wouldn't have to rely on his mouth to balance you.

You clearly see your mistakes and I can see exactly what you are talking about. You really need to get your legs underneath you, I sometimes have that problem. but my trainer said that i'm legs look much better now, because they are conditioned. but your horse is very nice btw. and I think everyone else is giving great advice and critques!

Thanks JustMe...I'm posting my responses to your comment below

1.pic|look up and around(not sure where your eyes are, maybe they are up already?). Eyes are up, its a small arena, so they don't have far to look forward. LOL (Tho I tend to glance down occassionally)

Hands up with thumbs on top, heels down This is a new bad habit I've started I'll keep working on NOT doing that!

2.pic|it looks you are pulling him and he is pulling you.Is he strong? He was very hot and very strong today. He's always been a puller, but really bad today. Try to post lower and slow. You'll notice my but landing practically on the BACK of the saddle. I was trying to slow him more with my seat, unsuccessfully. Again, your hands are twisted to the inside.and your heels could be down more.

3 pic|everything mentioned above Agreed.... still working

4 pic|are you in a 2 point possition or half seat?if not you need to SIT back, deep into the saddle.Your butt should not come out. Was working on my 1/2 seat.

Your horse could use its hindquaters alot more and get into a rounded frame. Absolutly. Right now he doesn`t seem to be on the bit. Not much at all today! LOL He does sparatically...we are working on getting him to soften more consistantly and not hollow out. Not sure if it is just the picture+day or if this is a constant issue. Its a constant issue we've been working to fix.....slowly improving but today was rough in that department. I can post a video from about a week ago that shows him much more quiet and soft. Click here to watch JH-Clinic-4-06Does his tack fit properly? Tack fits properly, shouldn't be an issue there. if you can rule pain issues out try to do lots of circles, serpentines, figure 8,and transitions.

Thanks so much for posting your thoughts!!!
