Update!!!

I have typed 2 other threads about my horse one about him spooking and the other about him taking off when I try to canter him. Well everything you all said has helped!!! He has not spooked once in the last two weeks even with vehicals coming and going. And he is also cantering very well!!! It takes a few trys to get the correct lead, but he doesn't take off anymore. I rode today and he was so calm I would have swore that he was an old nag, he was that calm. I am even more proud of him, because I have not clipped his bridle path, or his ears and wiskers since I got him. He let me clip them no problem!!! The lady that owned him before said that she had to twitch him, but I pretty much refuse to do that. I do not beleive in twitching. I just thought I would keep you all updated!!! Thanks for all the help and advice!!!

Well today was a bad day. The farrier came and shoed him this morning, then I put him in the pasture like always. He then coliced. It was pretty bad. I could not stop walking him anytime we would stop he would literally fall down. I walked him for 3 hours strait. Now he is back to normal. I was just wondering does colic cause horses to not have control of their legs, and fall down like that?

Horses want to roll when they have colic, to relieve their belly ache, and often times literally "throw" themselves to the ground, which may seem like their legs are collapsing.

Question

He was not trying to roll. It was like he was paralized. I was just wondering if it was colic? His symptoms were these, Dehydration, falling over, heavy breathing, pawing and kicking, he was able to poo, but when he tried to park out to pee he would fall over. He has coliced before, but this time if it was colic it was different, it just wasn't like normal colics that I have delt with. Do you think it could be something else, or was it just REALLY BAD?

He could have possibly been "Tying up". Was the farrier a stressful thing for him?

It does sound like he was tying up rather than colicing but sometimes it's hard to tell the two apart. My advice would be to have a vet out if he does it again and get a diagnosis so you'll know which you are trying to treat.

Glad to hear that he's doing better for you, BTW!

Here is a link that goes over the basics. Quarter Horses with Impressive breeding are known for HYPP which is a cause, but not necessarily the only one.
