I just sing, hum or whistle songs that have the same beat as the gait I'm at. (Usually the walk) That way the horse finds comfort in hearing my voice, it's a "singy tone" which I really think it makes them less spooky. Plus the tempo seems enjoyable to both horse & rider. "Red River Valley" seems to have a very nice tempo, easy to repeat over and over (mainly because I don't know the words ) I often pat my leg while riding to the same beat - must be an obsessive compulsive disorder My boy is less likely to "call back" to the horses at the barn when I do this too.

Just be careful of using iPods while riding... sometimes it's good to be able to hear noises - and it could be very dangerous on the road.

Yep, always ride with only one earbud in! You always want to be aware of your surroundings.

Great choices guys!! I have been experimenting with diferent types of music depending on what mood my horse is in. If its a cold windy day, then i put on some classical music, (i like the up beat symphony cd from Ruth Poulsen www.ruthhoganpoulsen.com). But if its a boring and lazy day then I use tha salsa CD...really gets me going.

I used to listen to the Ipod all the time when I ride.

I wont lie, when I am riding and want a good WP ride, I <3 "Slow Ride" by Foghat.

It just fits perfect with a wonderful WP ride.

I also love to have my Ipod at the bigger shows, where I need to focus. Listening to the Ipod before a class (especially pattern classes) helps me focus on Me, and my horse. Instead of letting my nerves get out of control, or watching my competition. I have had repeatedly better patterns, and rides at the big shows when I listen to the iPod before the class to focus.

I use music when I ride quite often. Definately keeps me calm and my horses relax quicker.
When I go to dressage rallies and we practice our freestyles there is one lady I simply cannot ride at the same time as. She rides a little 15hh dressage horse and her music throws Tai right out (he is 18.2hh). He really throws his toys when her music is played LOL
