Ultrasound question

Just wondering how many of you had your mare sedated for an ultrasound.. I know it all depends on the mare's behavior.

When we have the vet come out for an AI or an ultrasound, almost everytime they sedate the mares just because it helps keeps them more calm and under control. But yes, it all does depend on the mares behavior. Are you expecting a foal soon?

Almost never. There are risks associated with tranquilizing a mare, as well. So, we start out going slow and seeing how it goes. If the mare becomes fractious, will try a twitch, if that doesn't work, we'll try a lip chain and last resort, tranquilizing. With that said, most mares after the first few times at our place, actually walk right in to the stocks and don't mind the whole procedure <smile>. But, it "does" help that we have a bucket filled with grain sitting at the front of the breeding stocks the whole time They figure out pretty darn quickly that it's actually a good place to be!

Hope that helps.

We don't sedate either (or I should say our vets have not, LOL). We also palpate cows and don't sedate However, stocks or chutes are used so movement is at a minimum anyway, gotta love those kicking bars.

Thanks, I am having my two mares checked this morning to see if they're in foal I'll try to dig out my hay net. I am going to suggest he doesn't sedate, the mares are really good I don't think it should be a problem.

ER, what would say the risks are? and do you mean risks to the foals if pregnant?

I do not have stocks at my place and we sedated the mares until they got onto the system. Now we don't use anything. If I continue breeding I will build a set, not all mares are as comfortable with the process as mine are.

Be careful with stocks. Besure they can't be tipped over. Someone lost a beautiful young mare--at a vet's place--when the stocks went over.

You have to be careful what drugs you use for sedation because they can effect the fetus.

I don't know what stocks are. He's probably going to do it in the stall.

Stocks are a metal holding area made for horses.... they keep the stallion or handler from getting kicked and allow the vet or person working on the horse the ability to work with out having to manage the horse.

The curved left side moves and the back gate moves... to allow the mare to be contained for work... you can see the ultrasound machine in the back...
