You can stack two bales of straw behind the horse to help protect the vet. I would have another person there to look after the u/s machine. You'll need an outlet and an extension cord if they bring the u/s machine.

Hope that helps.

Exactly how my vet feels. He also palpates without it.

OK that is what I thought stocks were..

Just had both mares done , he sedated the 4 yr old maiden and not the 13 yr old experienced mare. I think he sedated the other one only as a precaution cause he didn't even try without drugs. Anyways, thier both done and in foal. YAY

both my mares have been sedated for ultrasound. We tried first with the twitch but neither of them would stand for it.

One of my mares ( before I owned her) has has five foals all fillies except one, the only time she was bred back on her foal heat she had the colt. do you think there is something to that?

I don't think it has anything to do with when she was bred as the stallion determines the gender of the offspring.

*ETA* I shouldn't say determines but his sperm carries the gender factors

I never sedate them just to many risks, and always use a stock its much safer for both the horse and the person. A good stock isn't that much money and we do 25 to 30 US a year so worth it to us.
