Unhappy Uh oh Penny! What's wrong? - Update #10, 21, 23

So I saddled my girl up today and went into the arena she jumped out of yesterday. We were working on suppleness at the walk and when I asked her to trot, she did willingly but was obviously lame.

I got off her and took her to the round pen. I then asked her to trot either direction to confirm that it was in fact her front right she was hurting with. I felt up and down her leg: no tender spots, swelling, or heat anywhere.

I asked her to trot again. It really looks like the front right, but I checked the back left as well. Still nothing.

The only thing I found odd was a tiny little scab on the inside of her front right. I lightly picked at it and it easily fell off with new skin and the beginnings of hair underneath.

Perplexed, I gave her 2 grams of crushed bute in her feed and some cookies to help her feel better.

The only thing I could think of is possibly footsoreness? This would make the most sense since she did jump out of that arena onto the hard ground outside. I pressed on the bulbs of her heels, however, and found nothing. She has pads on, so there is nothing more I could really check.

Any suggestions?

By the way, I cleaned the cuts up again. No heat or swelling there.

She might just be sore from her antics- landed a bit wrong, used muscles that she has not used in awhile, and the minor wounds. As for the bute- I, myself would not give it to her until you know what the problem is. This is just a scenario: Your horse is sore after jumping out of the pen- she is now lame- say she had a small line fracture that you didn't know of, and you gave bute- she would feel lots better, run around because she now has no pain due to the bute, and further damages the leg. Some pain has a purpose- it stops the horse from doing 'too much', it lets you know if there is a problem- you can either watch it for a few days, cold water and wrap her, let her have time off, and then re-evaluate her, or call the vet right away. I hope/bet she just strained herself. Use the pain as a guide. If any horse were in obvious bad pain, whether from exercise, colic,-whatever I'd always call the vet. Hope she feels better soon.

I would also tend to suspect muscle soreness somewhere after her escapade--I would watch and wait for a couple of days, and leave the bute out, if she is just sore you don't want her over doing it.

Haha, man that mare gets enough attention - don't see why she needs a fix of it.

If by tomorrow she is still off I'm going to give the vet a call. O mare. I'm thinking it's just soreness, but ya never know.

Hope Penny's feeling better soon however I wouldn't reccomend 2 grams of Bute on a pregger's mare. Maybe she just pulled soemthing clearing the gate.

If she isn't better and you do call the vet, make sure that she is bute free. Pain can mask any real symptoms that she might be having making a diagnosis harder.

Update

I went out again today. Still no sign of injury yet she is still obviously lame at the trot. I went up and down ALL her legs today. No swelling or pain anywhere. She lifts each leg fine and doesn't protest in the least. Nothing is apparent at the walk. I picked up her front right (the one most likely to be injured since it is the one she is favoring at the walk) and really pressed everywhere on her hoof and was tapping and wiggling the shoe to see if that was giving her pain. Nothing. I'm completely stumped! I stretched out all her legs; she didn't resist to any of the stretches but actually encouraged them.

She seems happy and healthy otherwise.

Maybe I'll check her back tomorrow.

No bute today based on the recommendations from yesterday.

Any suggestions as to what it may be?
