Also, what counts as a refusal/runout? I was reading the handbook, and it was pretty confusing
Haha! I'm actually kinda used to it, at my old church there were FOUR of us!! Imagine that! lol

Ok, refusal. If the horse stops all forward motion and takes even a half step backwards then it's a refusal. The backwards step/motion is what signifies a refusal. If your horse slams on the brakes but then leaps over the jump a second later WITHOUT taking a backward step, it should still count for a jump. A hesitation at a jump should not be classified as a refusal. The first time I did XC buddy came screeching to a halt when he saw the water, but I was quick with my aids and he immediately lept into the water, because he never took backwards steps but kept his forward momentum we weren't charged with a refusal.

A runout is well... a runout lol. The horse sees the jump, the horse approaches the jump, but at the last second the horse darts out and doesn't take the jump. Now, know that a runout can happen ANYTIME after you have presented the jump to your horse. Say you are five strides out, your horse sees the jump and knows it is there, but you don't feel good about it so you pull him up and circle. That would very likely be considered a runout and thus penalized. But, if you circle before your horse sees the jump, and before you start setting him up for the jump, then you will most likely be ok. Does that make sense?

Essentially, the dividing line of what is and isn't a runout/refusal is in the hands of the jump judge at that particular fence. If they rule that it is a refusal or runout but you think it isn't, then you can protest the ruling to the TD and you might be able to get it overturned.

Hope that all makes sense!!

So dressage is over. I'm actually kind of glad It went pretty well, but I was quite nervous and so Bodie got a little quick (so weird for him!). We ended up with a 41.5, the best score that Bodie's ever gotten at an event! It could have been a 39.5, but I totally forgot to salute I was happy with that score for my first event, but I know we can always improve. Right now, I'm in 10th place out of 15 riders (which I'm also happy with because the other events that Bodie did, he was always dead last after dressage). Tomorrow's stadium, and I'm riding really early. I'll update tomorrow evening
