twh breed temperment

hi, i have a twh that i got a few days ago...ex-show horse. SHe is very tempermental when it comes to getting on her because she wants to go go go. She has left a bad impression on me about the breed because she reared up at my neighbors that were trying to hold her while I got on....there is another twh that i tried out yesterday and the lady might possibly trade horses with me. I rode her...she is green broke, but at least she eventually did what I wanted her to do and never kicked or bucked or reared...worse thing is when she pawed. But the best thing is I could mount and dismount without her even taking a step. Or and I didn't even have to get her into a gait..she did it naturally...the mare I have now ...we all know she can gait because she used to be a show horse but I can't get her to do it ....she trots or something because I bounce up and down just like with a QH. So anyway...this other mare is of course a bit spooky...not too bad...certain things and doesn't like dogs( I have some...can you break them of that?) but she rides so smooth and even though she is green broke, she does stand instead of wanting to go go go....she is ok at the whoa...needs more work but eventually stops.
So this twh that I have left a bad impression and I am wondering if it will be safe to buy this horse. I have green broke my qh gelding myself and he is just so calm and desensitized to almost everything....I clipped his coat about 30 seconds after introducing it to him. So I know how to work some of these things oiut but we have made a couple mistakes in horses within the past week and I guess maybe I am scared......help...

if you all think this new twh is not a good match...(btw..i rode her for like over an hour on my own without another horse for her...for the first time...and i am a beginner...I have been around them, just not as much as alot of other ppl) .... then pls suggest a breed that has a calm disposition. I have kids that want to run around and stuff and I know I can get her used to all this nonsense but if there is a breed you don thave to work hard at desensitizing..i'd liek to know about it...preferrably gaited (since I felt what it feels like, I dont' think I want a trotter.. just kidding...a good horse is a good horse...no matter what )

I know I have talked to you before abotu TWHs, but we LOVE ours. We have 2 both are bullys to other horses, but they are the ones that want attention. They love people and little kids. One of ours was trained as a show horse so he parked out, i bet it you make the first mare that did not stand still park out, she will be still. When you are bouncing in the saddle she is probably doing a hard pace. One way to correct that is to pull her head up and squeeze with your legs. It will probably set her in the right posisition to gait right. When they show them the have thier heads pulled pretty tight. also if you get her frot feet shoed and leave the back ones it might improve her gait. How long have you had her, sometimes it takes a bit to bind, and maybe your and her "horseinality" just dont match. We also have a saddlebred that when we got him he was scared of his own shadow. We spent lots of time on the ground, we made our back yard look like a junk yard, jsut filled it with scary things. We would lead him up to each thing and let him spook or what ever but we kind of ignored him and just acted really confident and touched it, finally he would get brave enough to smell it and then did not spook. We waved plasitc bags at him, and you have thought it was going to eat him, funny a 1000 pound animal scared of a walmart bag! Now he stands and eats and acts like it is nothing to have it waved all over and around on even ruubd on him even his face. We walked him over, around, bumping into, what ever we thought he might find scary and did it over and over till he did not care. Now we have him on trail rides and he goes though anything like the rest, wate bridges, pheasants fly up, deer run out and they are all ok. It really did not take that long either, he is trusting and willing to please and just a sweet horse. I believe that horses and sence if you are even the tinyest bit scared. You have to try and act confident, they have to trust that you are not going to let them get hurt, that it will be ok. My one daughter is great at this, she can get all the hroses to do anything, my other daughter has problems becasue they dont obey as well for her, but she lets them get away with stuf that my other daughter does not. She is just a more timid rider, adn sure enough they take advantage of her. I do with we were closer, it would be fun to ride together, may we could meet in Missouri, i could have my daughter work with her. She really ahs a way with them. but it does sound like you probably will get her undercontrol, if you had good luck with that other horse. I think this mare is just trying to see what she can get away with. Maybe put a halter with a chain over her nose and every time she acts up pop her with the cahin, that really straightned up one hrose attitude we had. He was a strong horse and we just could not control him, he was tall and high headed, and would not even look at us, we had to do that cahin thing, only a couple of times, and now he is a puppy dog. Good Luck, sorry so long...

TWH are known for their calm gentle, willing disposition. It sounds like you need to go back to basic manners and get her standing still to mount first if you want to keep her.

My TWH would always walk off with me and I had my first fall due to that. I had to go back to square 1 and work with him to stand. And my boy is lazy but I swear they all got thet "get up and go" gene. lol

If you need a trainer then get one to help. But I think that walking off problem is common in every breed if not nipped in the bud. I have seen many horses do that. It's downright dangerous.

Good luck

all TWH I've owned have been total sweethearts. My current TWH stands completely still until I'm ready...I can hop up and just stay there for 5 minutes or an hour and he won't budge until I ask him to.

now...my SSH is a go go go kinda horse...but a TON of ground work has made her into a more patient horse. Now...once my feet are in the stirrups and I'm settled, it's go go go..but it's a go go go when I say you can..

doesn't sound like a tn walker problem, but a horse problem...
If you are a beginner, I would not get this horse. Tn walkers are well known for their kind-hearted gentle and willing temperment. But any horse that needs a bit of work, needs a bit of work. I would highly recommend you not get the x-show horse. the other one is iffy as well since it is only green broke. For beginners, it's best to get a well broke horse...but that is just my opinion.
Please don't look at tn walkers based on this poor example. they are an awesome breed. A bit misunderstood and not very popular in the "english" show ring, but an awesome breed non the less...
good luck in whatever you decide.

I have a couple of Walkers that are out at my barn. I have nrver ridden them but is friends with their owners and have been around then alot. They are great horses one gets a little hot but not to bad they to are show horses and they look good in the ring. I guess it all depends on how they were trained but keep your chin up they all arent naughty.

Looks like you are getting a lot of opinions. Here is another. I am the third generation in the horse business and my family showed TWH for many years. My personal opinion is that since you are a beginner, you probably do not need an ex-show horse nor one that is green broke. It would be worth your time and maybe a little extra money to look for something in the middle. There are exceptions to every rule but my experience is that TWH are, in general, higher spirited and want to go. That being said, I have had some that were as calm and easy going as anything I have ever owned. Overall, I think that a quarter horse type is calmer by nature; however, depending on many things including how they are bred, this may not be the case. If you do not want to trot, you might want to consider a TWH and Quarter cross. Usually these have a smooth gate and a little off the edge.
What ever you decide on, get something that you are comfortable with that you can enjoy.....it is worth a little extra!
